About this listen

Boston Homicide Detective Caitlin Reagan walks a razor's edge, propping up her life on emotional constructs designed to help her manage grueling PTSD. She keeps her mother, boyfriend, and work separated and controlled, all in service to one horrible, tragic act she committed amid the Iraq war.

But when the murder of a charity worker brings her face to face with the beautiful and charismatic philanthropist, Marcella Carson. Cait is unable to deny the attraction and finds everything she thought she knew about her world, her life, and her very identity called into question as Marcella draws Cait into her dark world.

Sliding inexorably into an unsuspected Boston subculture, where creatures of myth and nightmare struggle to survive in a world of fading magic and proliferating public surveillance, Cait must face down her inner demons, rediscover her lost past, and catch an undead serial killer.

In her first novel, Aoibh Wood explores a dark urban fantasy world through the eyes of a woman struggling to come to terms with Post Traumatic Stress, personal trust issues, and the belated realization that she is a lesbian. On the way, we meet a colorful cast of characters, from a Latino cowboy cop with a love of country music to a ruthless vampire assassin and a retired serpent goddess with a passion for science.

This book is intended for adult listeners. It contains scenes of an intimate sexual nature, as well as themes and depictions of violence, sexual assault, and death.

I want some more of that.

The characters were interesting, the story was demanding of my attention, and Abby Craden was a great fit for this story. I look forward to the sequel.

fun and engaging with some real depth

Aoibh writes a surprisingly deep exploration of trauma and self-discovery in the guise of an action-packed paranormal romance. There are some flaws; at times it gets rather preachy about environmental causes, and while I agree wholeheartedly with the urgency and vehemence of her sentiments, it does affect my suspension of disbelief to have a 1500-year-old vampire talking like a Greenpeace devotee going on a wide-eyed rant. Also, as a tech nerd trans woman, I know that us tech nerd trans girls almost never date boys, and we mostly are in relationships with each other.(It's a particular annoyance of mine because media portrayals of us tend to present us trans women as a great deal more heterosexual than we actually are.)

Fantastic

I’ve loved reading Cait’s story but listening to it with Abby Craden bringing the characters to life outside of my head brings much more to it. Abby, as always, does a fantastic job with narration providing each character a voice that fits perfectly.

The story is terrific. Vampires, werewolves, and a detective at the center of so much more than she ever dreamed. Cait is a wonderful character. She has been through so much and while she has avoided mentally processing some of it, she doesn’t let it keep her away from helping her city. When faced with a bizarre murder that ends up being a string of them, she comes face to face with Marcella. The beautiful vampire sets her mind on having Cait but as events unfold there is more history to the story than Cait knows.

Take this journey with Cait through the streets and underground of Boston to discover what lies in wait and who is on Cait’s side.
Can’t wait for book 2, Black Mirror, on audio!

Definitely worth the credit AND the money!

I leave this review, conflicted!
But I LOVED THIS BOOK...it has a STORY, with great characters...and it built on the main hero's character, grit, with some flaws thrown in. While you root for her in all the situations, Cait is a character that you realize she's hiding trauma underneath too.

This isn't your "average" anything...does it have a fantasy, yes. Does it have a sapphic romance, yes it does. But it does NOT disappoint in both areas...while building a GREAT story...What I usually hate about books deemed "Sapphic Romance" is that they don't have a STORY to them...it's a "wham bam thank you" and does build....it's thinly disguised erotica.
NOT THIS BOOK...
The characters build, and develop...then boom...a little fantasy sneaks in....more character development, and boom there's the Sapphoic romance...but it NEVER loses its STORY...that is the hallmark of a great book IMHO.

So why am I conflicted? In those last 3-4 chapters you broke my world and then sent that world into another orbit.
I WANT that next book back...and I was hoping you could rethink the character's romantic arch too.... (without a spoiler: COME ON!? Really??)

Wish the next 2 were available!

Abby Craden is one of the best narrators hands down. she really brought this novel to life.
The novel itself is quite fantastic. It had many twists that I never saw coming. This means the next 2 novels have so much more story to tell, and neither are on here. Which makes me just sad. Looks like I have to find them outside of audible just so I can get the rest of the story.

glad I found this

There is a general lack of lesbian content and this series is filling that gap well.

New take on supernatural tropes

Honestly, I really enjoyed the story. I feel there could be more details to fill in some context gaps but honestly if you just go with it, it’s still a good story. There was humor and drama and a real human touch (no pun intended). The story definitely touches on serious topics that include some trigger warnings but just like life…you can’t just leave some things in the past. You gotta deal with things eventually. I’m looking forward to the next book, I have it pre-ordered.

I couldn't put it down...

What a great book! I was drawn in and invested in what was happening to and with everyone in the book. I have already pre ordered book 2 of the series, I can't wait to see what happens next.

Gripping story w/ slow burn relationship

I loved this book. The main character is believable, flawed, witty, and grows throughout the book. The author uses the city like a character, revealing new depths as the story progresses. …and narrated by my favorite actor!

i need book 2, 3, 4 etc...

The story was fantastic and the possibilities endless. I personally love that not all my questions have been answered it leaves things open for what I hope is a series in the making. I am really excited to see more from this author. As for Abbey there are not enough complaints in the world she is probably hands down my favorite narrator.
