Publisher's summary

Fresh from Miss Hepplewhite's Young Ladies' Academy, 16-year-old Jane Peck has come to the unknown wilds of the Northwest to be wedded to her true love, William Baldt, her idol from childhood. But her socially correct upbringing in straitlaced Philadelphia is hardly preparation for the colorful characters and crude life that await her in Shoal Water Bay in the Washington Territory.

Thrown upon her wits in the wild, Jane learns not only to cope, but to thrive - and to discover for herself whether she is truly proper Miss Jane Peck of Philadelphia, faultless young lady and fiancee, or Boston Jane, as the Chinook dub her, fearless and loyal woman of the frontier.

Drawn from historical material of the region, Boston Jane is a rich potpourri of adventure, humor, romance, and suspense, featuring a dashing new heroine who will win listeners' hearts as she discovers true desires of her own.

Critic reviews

"The intricate details of mid-19th century life on an untamed frontier - complete with carefully researched Chinook tribal history and real-life incidents of white settlers--are absolutely fascinating. A thrilling, entertaining read." (Amazon.com review)

Voices For Boston Jane

If you could sum up Boston Jane in three words, what would they be?

Adventurous, Exciting, Historical

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jehu because he is very sarcastic and funny.

What three words best describe Jessalyn Gilsig’s performance?

Distinct, Funny, Great

Any additional comments?

Jessalyn did a pretty good job reading but I think she could have made Jehu's voice a little more distinct. It was hard to tell the difference of voices between Jane and Jehu.

Wonderful story!

This is a fantastic story for young girls as it explores the differences between being who you think people want you to be and being who you want to be and finding the balance between both. Jane Peck follows her betrothed to Shoalwater Bay, Oregon in the late 1800s. There she learns that being a proper young lady isn't the most important thing and how things look is not the same as how things are. Empowering and exciting story. Jessalyn Gilsig does a lovely job with the narration. I only wish the 2 sequels were available as well.

A really really good story.

It's hard to find a decent story with a lesson learned, and unforgettable characters you carry in memory for a lifetime. This story has no need for a sequel and is not afflicted by some depressing circumstance in the beginning or middle as most stories today have that leave the main characters as stronger but more often than not, more corrupted than when they began. It is simply what it is called, "an adventure" masterfully crafted and masterfully narrated. I listened to it many times as a small child and still remember quite a bit today. The author has taken and accomplished the difficult task of developing a small practical girl, still in the protecting arms of innocence, through good motives into an impractical, vain flaunt but with good morals, and then gone a step further to mature her even more by realistic and historically accurate struggle into a well rounded humble, practical, and strong thinking woman. She has thankfully not taken the opportunity as most would to stuff her character with proud and destructive feminism, but with impressive clarity, displayed the true and realistic role of women, home and estate managers and help meets, not to be walked on by men, but not to walk on them either. She didn't need to flood the story with a bunch of false Christianity to do it but showed how the age lasting Christian morals of the time that had been constructed in the culture in the preceding centuries, guided this woman into these admirable character traits. A relieving and true pleasure to listen to a really really good story.
