About this listen

In captivating prose, Diane Les Becquets tells the story of one woman missing in the Colorado wilderness and another bent on discovering the missing woman's whereabouts in an unforgettably moving and thrilling literary debut.

It is the last weekend of the season for Amy Raye Latour to get away. Driven to spend days alone in the wilderness, Amy Raye, mother of two, is compelled by the quiet and the rush of nature. But this time, her venture into a remote area presents a different set of dangers than Amy Raye has planned for, and she finds herself on the verge of the precarious edge that she's flirted with her entire life.

When Amy Raye doesn't return to camp, ranger Pru Hathaway and her dog respond to the missing person call. After an unexpected snowfall and few leads, the operation turns into a search and recovery. Pru, though, is not resigned to that. The more she learns about the woman for whom she is searching, and about Amy Raye's past, the more she suspects that Amy Raye might yet be alive. Pru's own search becomes an obsession for a woman whose life is just as mysterious as the clues she has left behind.

As the novel follows Amy Raye and Pru in alternating threads, Breaking Wild assumes the white-knuckled pace of a thriller laying bare Amy Raye's ultimate reckoning with the secrets of her life and Pru's dogged pursuit of the woman who, against all odds, she believes she can find.

loved it

Moving mystery with lots of backstory. No animal cruelty. Only legal hunting and nature's predation.

Good book just not for me

If you love love the outdoors and everything about it or if you grew up in the country this might appeal to you more because you might connect with it more naturally. At first I was really drawn in by it but after a while I just got bored! I don't think this was because of the writing or narration I honestly don't think this book is my favorite genre

Great read

Great read. Leaves a few loose ends, which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.

Couldn’t Stop Listening

Beautifully written, beautifully read. The descriptions are tangible. This book has layers, lessons, wisdom. The women are so similar, yet polar opposites. I loved it. Great survival lesson- in life, love, and the snowy wilderness. Bravo!

Never go into the woods alone!

A good tail of two strong women who know the outdoors and nature. A good mystery with some interesting but somewhat far fetched survival information.

Great characters

I was hesitant at first, because I didn't want to read about hunting, but the story captured my attention from the get go. The characters were real, likable but not perfect. Very relatable!

Good, but not great

There were a number of points where this book drew me in and a handful where it started to lose me. Growing up in Colorado, with time in both the Front Range and the Western Slope, I found the author's descriptions of the seasons, the terrain, the weather, and the hunt were well crafted and pulled me deeper into the story. Her use of some wildlife as the villain was a turnoff, as were a few other subthemes that didn't ring true (I don't want to give away too much). Nonetheless, the author has a good writing style and crafts descriptions that are enticing to the reader and create a vivid story landscape. The crafting of the psychological landscape was well written as well. I just found some elements were outside her wheelhouse and either a little more experience or more research would have crafted a more perfect book.

A must read especially if you like the outdoors

Would you listen to Breaking Wild again? Why?

yes, it is a good story; narrated in an engaging way. I felt as if I learned something about being stranded in the wild. It was all believable.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, Amy Ray was lost in the woods and I wondered if they would find her. I kept wondering how she could survive such an ordeal

What about Therese Plummer and Saskia Maarleveld ’s performance did you like?

They just read it as if they were the person in the story. NO, they WERE the people in the story

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I just finished a two hour hike and listened to it and was so engrossed in the book that I felt as if I had just began the hike instead of ending the hike. I almost wanted to keep hiking so that I could finish the book.

Any additional comments?

I want the author to write another book and I want the two women to read it.
