About this listen

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone comes an incandescent story about the resilience of the human spirit, the triumph of hope, and the meaning of home.

In the rugged Pacific Northwest lies the Olympic National Forest - nearly a million acres of impenetrable darkness and impossible beauty. From deep within this old growth forest, a six-year-old girl appears. Speechless and alone, she offers no clue as to her identity, no hint of her past.

Having retreated to her western Washington hometown after a scandal left her career in ruins, child psychiatrist Dr. Julia Cates is determined to free the extraordinary little girl she calls Alice from a prison of unimaginable fear and isolation. To reach her, Julia must discover the truth about Alice’s past - although doing so requires help from Julia’s estranged sister, a local police officer. The shocking facts of Alice’s life test the limits of Julia’s faith and strength, even as she struggles to make a home for Alice - and for herself.

“One of [Kristin Hannah’s] most compelling and riveting novels.” - Booklist

NOT a new release - it's a book from 2005

Kristin Hannah is on my "automatically download" list. I didn't think twice when I saw that this book released "12/2020". It took me about 20 minutes to realize that I'd listed to this on CD 13 years ago. I felt mislead, and it's not the first time that Audbile says something is "new" when it's not.

The story is sweet but dated. Kristin Hanna's writing has become a lot less heavy handed and more nuanced over the years and it's obvious when you compare the melodrama of this book to her later works.

It's a fine audiobook, Suzanne Toren is an older style narrator (sweeter, softer, less difference between character voices, all them men sound basically the same).

If it's on a 2 for 1 sale go for it, but at full price/1 credit I'd download something of her's that's more recent.

Narrator was not the right fit

I’m a huge fan of Kristin Hannah and have read/listened to the majority of her books. This story seemed a bit more far fetched than most but the real problem was the narrator. These women are in their 30’s yet the voice of the reader sounded MUCH older. It was difficult to listen to and get a true sense of the scene that was trying to be portrayed.

It was a lot better than I thought it would be

Stories that involve children are not always my favorite. knowing the antagonist George was innocent made it hard to chew on the ending, but the sacrifice he made proved he truly loved his daughter Brittany as he was willing to give her to Julia. spot on for this story. Love Kristin Hannah

Hard to get past the narration

I’m sure the narrator is a lovely person but she was not the right choice for this book. It was very hard to get lost in the story when you knew all of the characters were half the age they sounded. Tones and inflections were off and it really made a difference. It felt more like a schoolteacher reading it. I think this book would have been much better reading from the physical book if you can sit for that long. I can’t, so I use audible

Needs a different reader

Interesting story but the overall storyline was lost as a result of the poor reader. Her voice and interpretation of Julia was simply dreadful, it distracted from the storyline.

Not my favorite by Kristin Hannah

The concept of the book reeled me in, but the narration and finally the slow pace turned me off. I loved The Four Winds, with its colorful believable characters, but found none of those here. It was bland in comparison. I was disappointed because Kristin Hannah is one of my favorite authors.

I am still crying.

My Sister and I read books together and this one had both of us so full of emotional ups and downs and even laughing out loud in some parts.
The story was incredibly written.

OK

Good story, didn't enjoy performance. I decided to stick with it. Some if the characters' voices were unpleasant, i.e. Peanut, George.
