About this listen

Mrs. Moses is a small woman with a big heart and enormous courage. The only survivor of a Cossack raid on her village, she takes with her a big cast-iron frying pan, so heavy that she can only sling it over her back. Yet this is no ordinary frying pan, it's The Family Frying Pan, blessed with a Russian soul. From this frying pan Mrs. Moses manages to feed the various refugees who are travelling with her across Russia to freedom. In return, each of the group must tell a story around the campfire at night, stories of compassion and bravery, of human frailty and, above all, of hope.©2013 Christine Courtenay; 2014 Bolinda Publishing Pty. Engaging set of stories

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The narration was great and I loved the way the stories were interwoven around the bubbling food cooking in the frying pan. The characters were delightful as were their stories.

Wonderful story from an amazing author

I am a big fan of Bryce Courtenay after an Aussie friend recommended him. I have, with this book, have now read them all. This book was beautifully written, narrated and produced. I couldn't put it down as it was so captivating. All of the characters were wonderfully developed. I can't recommend this book enough.

Stick with Humphrey Bower-- there's no one better

Liked Humphrey Bower's accent much better than the woman narrator. He is simply brilliant and renders Courtenay's books just sublimely.
I'd give his portion of the narration a 10 if I could!

funny and engrossing

This book held my wifes and my interest on a driving trip. The stories are engrossing and you really wonder at the end are they true? Very enjoyable and well narrated.

Woven tales

What does Melissa Eccleston and Humphrey Bower bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Indeed, the narration kept the stories moving even when I wondered if I might lose a thread.

Any additional comments?

It was a great system for including stories of the time from differing points of view.

Stories were good but narration no. Better read yourself

Humphrey Bauer should have narrated the entire book. I look forward not only to Bryce Courtenay’s wonderful stories but Humphrey Bauer’s narration. I listened to Melissa Eccleston’s chapters until I could take it no longer. She was struggling so hard to do a Russian accent, that soon was all I could hear. The stories were lost and her voice soon became grating. It became so tedious, I jumped ahead to the last few chapters, read by Humphrey Bowers. This book is better purchased in print and read yourself.

Both are excellent and that is why I gave them five stars. Humphrey Bower is the narrarator

Not an inspiring or interesting book

I did not warm to this book. It was a letdown, I felt that it was a book written for money and little else.

Story: Because of the way in which this story is told the characters are not people that I cared about. The story is told as the group stops to chat during their escape. Each person tells how they came to be amongst the persecuted and felt the need to escape from their country of origin. I only cared for one of the characters and that was the one that loved her husband a little too much. I think that perhaps Mr. Courtenay has failed here is because the story is someone else's, not his.

Narrator: Even Mr. Bower seemed bored by this. Perhaps I am mistaken and it was just that I couldn't wait for it to be over. But this wasn't his usual standard. Still better than most but not his greatest work.
