About this listen

Led by Admiral Naismith (a.k.a. Lord Miles Vorkosigan), the Dendarii Mercenaries have pulled off the daring interspace rescue of an entire Cetagandan POW camp. But they have made some deadly enemies. Having finally outrun the infuriated Cetagandans, the Dendarii arrive on Earth for battle, shuttle repair, and a well deserved rest.

But Miles realizes he's in trouble again. First the Mercenaries' payroll doesn't arrive on time, and then someone tries to murder him. Now Miles must juggle both his identities at once to unravel the complicated plot against him, and to reveal an unexpected ally.

Just who is trying to assassinate which of his personas, and why?

Deserves 5 stars but...

I had to downgrade Mr. Gardener for not being consistent with his pronunciation. This is Book 9 and in the last 6 books he’s pronounced the Dendarii “DendarEE”, but now he calls them “DendarEE-EYE”.

Other than that, the plot was entertaining, the characters consistent, and the remarks often hilarious. Pure Lois McMaster Bujold. Highly recommended.

new and resurrected relatives found on Earth

Best if you read BORDERS OF INFINITY short story first.
It’s 3 months after the Denderii rescued the 10,000 from Dagoola IV and they’ve been pursued by the Cetagandans all the way to Earth where they’ve stopped for repairs, refunding and resupply.
But Earth isn’t as neutral as it seems on the surface and it isn’t long until Miles is in the thick of it. Redirected messengers, Komarran expatriates, clones, a budding romance with Elli Quinn, and resurrected family members are just for starters. We get to meet Duv Galeni for the first time and he shows up in many future books. My favorite part is stunner tag in the tunnels which I replay many times every time I hear it;-))
Gardner does an excellent job with narration and is still one of the best in the business.

Miles on Earth as a sightseer and finds a brother

Would you consider the audio edition of Brothers in Arms to be better than the print version?

Audio books give the reader more time to savor the words and actions of the characters. This is a book that should be both read and listened to.

What other book might you compare Brothers in Arms to and why?

This book is comparable to other books in the series. There are no characters quite comparable to Mile Vorkosigan and no author quite like Bujold. As part of the series this book works well in establishing Ivan and Eli Quinn as well as introducing Galeni and Mark. Since all of these characters add their own particular voice to the series I consider this book an essential.

What about Grover Gardner’s performance did you like?

Very good as always

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Too long for one setting but it makes a great trip book and is good company while doing yard work.

Any additional comments?

This is a great book in a great series. It is one that no reader of Science Fiction should miss.

Another incredulous & entertaining Miles adventure

▪︎ Plot, Star Trekky. Besides, who needs one anyway?
▪︎Usual amount pf incredulous incidents and accidents by Bujold
▪︎Miles' razor-sharp wit, near omniscient capabilities of deduction and anticipation are here again. As entertaining as ever.
▪︎The Dendarii are here. Need I say more?

So. To recap. This is as incongruous, incredidble, entertaining and oxymoronic a Miles Vorkosigan/Admiral Neismith story as they come.

Enjoy.

Great story, bad narration

After five books, narrator changed how he pronounced some of the names, it was incredibly jarring especially when it comes up every other sentence.

Miles Meets Mark

One of my favorite books from one of my favorite series. I found the “I” sound at the end of Galeni and Dendarii very hard to take. All this time I had read it as and “E” sound.

Great Twist!

Another fabulous adventure for Miles Vorkosigan/Admiral Naismith. And what a great ride! Bujold's world-building continues to shine, and her plotting, and her character development. Just wonderful! And do much fun!

Great story, wry humor

A very entertaining book! I loved all the scenes where we see Miles’ self deprecating humor and wry observations on the events he finds himself in. There’s plenty of action, (and a little romance!), so the story never drags. But Miles is clearly the star of this book. I enjoyed every single minute of it!
