About this listen

On his way to his betrothal, young Lord Penric comes upon a riding accident with an elderly lady on the ground, her maidservant and guardsmen distraught. As he approaches to help, he discovers that the lady is a Temple divine, servant to the five gods of this world. Her avowed god is the Bastard, "master of all disasters out of season", and with her dying breath she bequeaths her mysterious powers to Penric. From that moment on, Penric's life is irreversibly changed, and his life is in danger from those who envy or fear him.

Set in the fantasy world of the author's acclaimed novels The Curse of Chalion, Paladin of Souls, and The Hallowed Hunt, this novella has the depth of characterization and emotional complexity that distinguishes Bujold's work.

Absolutely Positively Fabulous

Excellent narration by Grover Gardner. He does voices well, both male and female.

This is a very entertaining novella. I was in love with Penric from the very beginning. Grover Gardner uses the same voice for Penric as he used for Lord Miles VorKosigan. When Desdemona accepted her name from Penric, I fell in love with her too. I have not matched Desdemona's voice with her Vor series equivalent yet. I am looking forward to the other books in this series.

Wonderfully told story

Lois McMaster Bujold once again proves herself a masterful storyteller with this new series in the World of the Five Gods. A fun look at a different part of the world she's already crafted with exacting detail and narrated by a smooth, soothing voice.

What an interesting premise! Beautifully told. Well acted with just the right ironic tone. I'm really looking forward to the series.

Delightful

The Penric tales are all delightful and a lovely extension to the world of the 5 Gods. Start with this one and listen to them all.

Great story, excellent performance

I don't know what it is about Bujold's writing that I like so much. Really, the story is pretty short and the events fairly pedestrian, certainly when compared to the epic fantasy books I"m used to reading. However, her writing is fantastic and the character dialogue is excellent. She obviously has a great sense of humor. The performance by Grover is excellent. My only complaint is that I wish the books were longer.

Introducing Penric’s Demons

Watching Penric meet his layer of fantastical demons is interesting and fun. We mostly hear from the first layer, but her patience with Penric is delightful. A young man being inhabited by at least ten female demons is a romp.

First novella in series

I really enjoy this little series. I've re-read it a few times in ebook form, and the narrator makes this form equally amusing. I have,of course, purchased the other two.

So much love for Penric and his Demon

Lois Mcmaster Bujold is a phenomenal crafter of beautiful relationships - of characters who think not solely of themselves, but of those with whom they share their lives. I highly recommend this book as well as all of the Vorkosigan saga.
