About this listen

Tennyson: Don’t get me started on the Bruiser. He was voted “Most Likely to Get the Death Penalty” by the entire school. He’s the kid no one knows, no one talks to, and everyone hears disturbing rumors about. So why is my sister, Brontë, dating him? One of these days she’s going to take in the wrong stray dog, and it’s not going to end well.BronteMy brother has no right to talk about Brewster that way — no right to threaten him. There’s a reason why Brewster can’t have friends — why he can’t care about too many people. Because when he cares about you, things start to happen. Impossible things that can’t be explained. I know, because they’re happening to me.

Award-winning author Neal Shusterman has crafted a chilling and unforgettable novel about the power of unconditional friendship, the complex gear workings of a family, and the sacrifices we endure for the people we love.

Critic reviews

“The English language needs another noun: ‘a shusterman.’ It means a book that is guaranteed to grip you from beginning to end and leave you thinking about the characters for years, just like bruiser will. Buckle up and prepare for a great ride!” (Laurie Halse Anderson, National Book Award Finalist for Speak and Chains)
"At once dark and darkly humorous, intense and intensely satisfying, bruiser may very well be Neal Shusterman’s best novel yet. Put this one at the top of your ‘must read’ list.” (Ellen Hopkins, New York Times best- selling author of Crank)

Odd, but OK.

I liked the story alright. It was definitely different and I think it would be good for getting trend to realize how their actions affect others.

Thought Provoking

I listen to audio books strictly for entertainment.
This story is entertaining and mysterious (with a lot of unanswered questions ) and fun.
It also goes deep by questioning pain and heartache and their purpose in our lives.
The narration was good, other than Cody's voice, which sounded like a teenage girl trying to sound like a boy and that really distracted me.

Read this!

I could not believe how surprised I was at how good this book was. Wow! I read somewhere (can't recall where) that was for young adults. I'm not a young adult and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it's a great read for a younger audience for sure, but not exclusively.

It reminded me a lot of The Green Mile and John Coffey. The characters have similar capabilities. However, it was different enough to make me want to keep reading. It wasn't completely sappy and predictable like I expected. I almost wanted it to be happily predictable, because I became so attached to the characters.

The narrator was good enough, but a little bit awkward at times I thought. I would listen to him again, though.

This is one of the few books that I would recommend to someone that doesn't read very often. It makes you think about more than just yourself. There is a bullying message to be learned as well.
