When the California drought escalates to catastrophic proportions, one teen is forced to make life and death decisions for her family in this harrowing story of survival from New York Times best-selling author Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman.

The drought - or the Tap-Out, as everyone calls it - has been going on for a while now. Everyone’s lives have become an endless list of don’ts: don’t water the lawn, don’t fill up your pool, don’t take long showers.

Until the taps run dry.

Suddenly, Alyssa’s quiet suburban street spirals into a warzone of desperation; neighbors and families turned against each other on the hunt for water. And when her parents don’t return and her life - and the life of her brother - is threatened, Alyssa has to make impossible choices if she’s going to survive.

Critic reviews

"Multiple narrators and alternating perspectives underscore the volatility of this speculative story... The narrators ratchet up their pacing and intensity as the characters face increasingly grueling challenges, turning this survival thriller into a white-knuckle listening experience." (AudioFile)

I wept in my car. Character development slowly grips you, as you follow the lives wandering a reality that truly could not be too far off. And the decisions made to survive make perfect sense. What a lovely “read”. Currently stocking water bottles in my closet hahaha

Beautiful and terrifying laced with potential reality

This is the best book I’ve ever read. The end had me sobbing in my kitchen. WHAT A ROLLERCOASTER. All 10 copies at my school and 5 at my public library were checked out and had a long hold list so I went to audible and I HAVE NO REGRETS. PLEASE BUY THIS BOOK ITS WORTH IT

11/10 READ

Clean water is going to be the issue not too many years from now. This captures the “what if” we dry out.

Great realistic look at what could happen.

I’ve loved Shustermans works all through high school, I tried reading Dry about a year ago and put it down because of the darker subject matter. It’s handled wonderfully of course but it just feels so real!

The performance of the readers is absolutely amazing, there are part where it feels like I’m there with them. That’s mainly the writing of course but it’s Neil Shusterman for gods sake of course it’s good. The right amount of humor at the right moments. Absolutely incredible.

What a terrifically terrifying story!

I am always surprised when books written a few (or more) years ago end up sounding like it was just yesterday. This is one of those. This book pinpoints exactly what Speaker McCarthy’s districts have been struggling with and is finally getting a small bit of publicity.

“Throughout [his] tenure, this region of California has spent more time than any other part of the country in exceptional drought -- the US Drought Monitor's most severe category.” CNN

This is why I found Dry to be so interesting, young adult or not.

Always surprised

Amazing job at unveiling all aspects of humanity in a microcosm of Southern California. The characters grow on you as they grow on each other throughout their treacherous journey. This kind of apocalyptic setting is too close to home which it what makes it terrifyingly good.

Humanity unveiled

This book was on my mind ALL DAY every day while I was reading it. I was so swept up in the characters, the events and the decisions they were all making that I had a live stream of texts going to my husband for the entire duration of the read. This book grabbed me by the front of the shirt and dragged me on a journey with a bug-out bag and a large handful of wonderfully compelling characters. I didn’t know if I would love this book the way I love Scythe but gosh darn it he’s done it again guys. SHEESH.

As for the narration it could not have possibly been better. The cast of narrators is sensational. I’ve never heard this many narrators in a project and somehow they were all phenomenal.

Bravo all around, this book is going to leave a mark on my soul

I normally do not like multiple narrators as I find them distracting. That is not the case in this book as only one narrator is reading at a time. The characters’ stories and points of view are weaved together nicely. An interesting story. Certainly worth a listen.

A fun easy listen

It really felt like there was never ending bad at some parts but over all a great book for all most any thing.

The part with the black void with Jacky was really easy to connect to.

I laughed. I cried. The narrators were absolutely wonderful and made the already wonderful story that much better. Kept my attention and had me at the edge of my seat. Highly recommend!
