Story
In the minds of many Americans, the name of Jesse James and the Wild West are practically synonymous. Jesse James was a robber, a murderer, and a notorious outlaw, who carried as many weapons as he could. He could shoot with both hands while he held the reins of his horse in his teeth. He was an extremely popular man in his day, a phenomenon that he readily accepted because he was a person who craved attention.

Story
His name was Geronimo. And any mention of that name immediately conjures up images of the last gasp of Native American control of the Western Frontier. Geronimo, to be sure, was one of the most effective leaders in the resistance against America’s westward advance, but he was much more than just a good field commander for the Apaches. For even after the West was supposedly won, Geronimo proved more than ready to adapt. In this book, you will get the full picture of Geronimo: the good, the bad, and the downright incredible.

But his brief and brutal life reveals how his tragic existence led him into a life of crime. After growing up in poverty as an Irish immigrant in New York City and losing his father at a young age, Billy the Kid had to endure losing his mother when he was only 15.

Deadwood, 1876: a notorious little mining town in modern-day South Dakota that was a hive of criminal activity. Thieves, drunkards, prostitutes, and murderers ran rampant among its booming streets. There were over 300 murders in this town during the first year of its existence. When Wild Bill Hickok was brutally shot and killed at point-blank range in the back of the head, it was obvious that someone had to rise up and save the town of Deadwood from itself.

Story
If, as historian Thomas Carlyle said, the history of the world is but the biography of great men, then it is also true that the story of the great men is a parable of their times, places, and generational aspirations. The life of Davy Crockett, one of the most cherished and remembered American frontiersmen, is an accurate representation of the United States as it stretched westward to become one of the largest nations in the world. Yet, David Crockett was not a mythical character but a very real person.

Story
When Austrian President Franz Jonas visited the Vatican in 1971, Pope Paul VI named Austria “the Island of the Blessed”. He did so to emphasize Austria’s steep recovery. Only 25 years had passed since the end of the Second World War, and Austria was already one of the most prosperous European countries. One might argue that Austria was always a rich country, and during the times of its Habsburg rulers, it certainly was. But after the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was lost between two worlds - its German heritage and its multiethnic nation.

He wasn’t always the Great Showman. In fact, Phineas Taylor Barnum grew up in relative poverty with only his wits to help him along. When his father died, the 15-year-old boy entered the working world as a shopkeeper’s assistant. In leaps and bounds, he worked his way from assistant to shop owner, lottery office owner, and, eventually, entertainment promoter. The bulk of his career was focused on his beloved American Museum, where thousands of ticket holders flocked every day to look at the human oddities, stuffed animals, live whale, and American memorabilia.

Story
Joan's story almost feels like a novel instead of a part of history. She was a shining savior on a warhorse, waving her white banner and calling her soldiers forth to victory; but she was also painfully and intensely human, a young girl who wept and bled just the same as the rest of us. In the same breath, it is as easy to relate to Joan as it is to be awed by her incredible character. She may have been beatified as a saint, but Joan of Arc was in many ways a very ordinary human being, a person who felt pain and fear, a person who made mistakes, and who had moments of weakness.

From being the home of some of the first people in America to being the birthplace of the United States, Virginia has had an incredibly rich and interesting history even before its inauguration as a state. Virginia was once the most populous and affluent state in the country and the birthplace of many of the most important figures in early United States’ history. Yet, despite Virginia’s successes and great heritage, it has, for much of history, been a divided state that has found itself debating even the most basic rights and issues.

very brief overview of Bill Cody
while it was nice to have a short book to finish my evening, I feel like this just a highlight, or even cliff notes version of Cody's life. I know it's not CH's deal to be very thorough in their stories, but this one seemed a bit lackluster. hopefully, if they have one on James Hickok, it'll be a.bit more comprehensive.

Read the headline; this was the man.
Unfortunately he also cheated on this wife & killed a lot of buffalo.
This is a good quick & dirty intro. The film versions tend to skimp on the facts, so these intros are essential.

Buffalo Bill
Due to the early death of his father William Cody did what he could to support his mother and sisters. He worked for the pony express where he met Wild Bill Hickok who later would join him on stage. William Cody joined the army where he acquired the Buffalo Bill nickname. A chance encounter led him to his first time on stage and with much persistence he finally agreed to return to the stage and the rest is history. Good read.

Biography Buffalo Bill Cody
More than an Entertainer, Cavalry, Scout, Rancher, Indian Agent & Advocate, who brought the Wild West back to the East. A short, but interesting biography of William Cody, who has been immortalized in many fictitious reports and stories. The narrator had perfect diction, but imparted little emotion to the reading of this biography. Unaccustomed to, and not expecting a British accent, it took me a little while to adjust to it at first. Overall, an interesting historical account of one of America's Western Folk heroes. On a personal note, it was liberating to sit back and just listen to the narrator tell the story without having to hold anything, flip pages/swipe screens, etc. I received a free pre-release copy of this audiobook, in exchange for my impartial review.
