American author and banker Thomas Bulfinch (1796–1867) is best known for his book Bulfinch's Mythology, a thorough compendium of myths and stories from all across the world.

When Bulfinch's Mythology was originally released in 1855, both America and Europe were becoming more interested in myths and stories from the distant past. As academics and authors looked to rediscover the literary and aesthetic traditions of the past, the middle of the 19th century was a time of cultural and intellectual upheaval. In this regard, Bulfinch's Mythology was a component of a larger initiative to rekindle interest in classical and medieval literature and to delve deeper into its symbolic and spiritual significance.

Bulfinch's Mythology became an immediate hit, and has been a well-liked reference source ever since. The book gained great acclaim in the United States, where it was adopted as a required text in educational institutions. Its accessibility and interesting writing made it a useful tool for literature, history, and mythology students, and it also helped many become familiar with the vast and intricate world of ancient and medieval narrative.

Bulfinch’s Mythology

This is a rather extensive collection of stories presented in a readily digestible manner. Throughout this collection, but in the latter two volumes specifically, emphasis is placed on identifying those parts of the legends which are historical fact and providing context for much of the rest. I believe that this book could provide a valuable resource when exploring these mythologies.

Great collection of stories

There are over 30 hours of myths and legends here! One of the best mythology resources that I have come across. The Greek Myths and Arthurian legends were familiar and well told. I particularly enjoyed the stories of Charlamagne because the were new to me. The narrator did a great job.

The Established Authority on European Legend

This is probably the best and most comprehensive collection of myths and legends from European tradition, spanning the Greek, Roman, British and Western European mythos. I loved all the old stories I'd studied in school and learning about some I'd never heard before.
A must have volume for folklore scholars.

Most comprehensive look at mythology

I was amazed at the breadth of this edition of mythology. It was very interesting being able to listen to ancient, ancient mythology on through the more commonly known and up through more "modern" tales of lore. It was interesting to see the common threads and the major differences. Not only is this the most comprehensive look at mythology I've seen, but it is also told in a way that is very accessible. It is told in more of a story telling style than in a facts driven style. At least, that's the way it seemed to me. I highly recommend taking a listen to this audiobook to all of those interested in history and mythology.

don't

The reader of this edition constantly whistles through his teeth. I abandoned it after the distraction was unbearable. It needs remastered with high pass filtering.
