About this listen

On Oklahoma’s Big Rock Prairie, a deaf boy finds a body in Pennington Creek. Johnston County Deputy Hannah Bond and Chickasaw Lighthorse Police Sergeant Bill Maytubby find a crime scene where nothing seems to fit - from the dead angler’s oversize waders to the kind of fish in his creel. They scour the creekside brush, then hit the road for Texas in a widening search for the killer.

On the Big Rock, a towering bearded man is building a limestone replica of Roman Jerusalem for a Christian passion play. His cronies, who are in league with an interstate fraud ring, want the boy to disappear now.

Flying an ancient rented Cessna, Maytubby takes fire from a suspect he is tailing, while Bond combs river trails for traces of the killer.

While Maytubby and Bond try to protect the deaf boy and his mother from the crime ring, an improbable ally materializes from the prairie oak thickets, wielding a monstrous shotgun.

70 years old. I'm a big fan of "modern-day western detective". I switched to listening to books about 15 years back.
Kris Lackey found the perfect voice in Mark Bramhall. Also, Kris Lackey is an excellent creator of character and the interplay
among them that could only happen in OK/TX/Ark area. Bravo. His plots are rich and several dimensions.

I'm looking forward to the next! I hope Bond and the Geezer get on somehow.

Lackey/Bramhall An Excellent Match

Love this series! Good, enjoyable narration. Interesting story. More than interesting characters, which were enhanced by the narrator. A good book will always teach you things about the characters, incidents, locations, and customs of the people or area, this book does this in interesting ways . Good police procedural.

If it weren’t for the summation at the end, I would not have known what happened. Confusing chain of events. Okay though.

Hard to follow

Down home country with interesting and unique detective work. I really enjoyed the descriptions. I've been to some of these places and it felt like I was there again. I hope the series continues.

Great Story

Love the main characters, Hannah Bond and Bill Maytubby and the various supporting characters and all their eccentricities. Very fast paced and not an overly complicated story arc with a lot of action and great characters.

Another great addition to this series

This was such a wonderful book to listen to on our road trip from Oklahoma to New Mexico. The story was interesting with some good laughs. The character development was vivid. We loved the narrator, he nailed each character. I would highly recommend this book especially to those that have a history with Oklahoma. Was fun to hear places familiar to me.
