About this listen

By Hook or by Crook: Booktrack Edition adds an immersive musical soundtrack to your audiobook listening experience!*

This is the 16th of 37 Emma Lathen best sellers; it features John Putnam Thatcher, SVP of the Sloan Guaranty Trust. The Parajian family owns the largest oriental rug company in the US. They are having a generational battle for stock control of the company. John Putnam Thatcher solves two murders by following the money, not the emotions.

*Booktrack is an immersive listening experience that pairs traditional audiobook narration to complementary music and sound effects. The tempo and rhythm of the score are in perfect harmony with the action and characters throughout the audiobook. Gently playing in the background, the music never overpowers or distracts from the narration, so listeners can enjoy every minute. When you purchase this Booktrack edition, you receive the exact narration as the traditional audiobook available, with the addition of music throughout.

Please note: The audio for this title has noise issues at the beginning and end of each file/chapter.

It is a good story. But the narration was distracting, which is not a good thing in an audio book. The background noise sometimes sounded like the book was recorded in a restaurant kitchen with clinking pots and pans; or had music that added nothing to the narration or story line; or blissful silence...there was no consistency. The narrator, Mr. Deaver Brown, has a unique voice and delivery. Perhaps he had a bad case of indigestion which made the words and phrasing poorly spaced, sometimes slurred, and occasionally mispronounced. Maybe he was tired and on the verge of yawning constantly. I know he has narrated many books, and so I am willing to assume that he can be quite good...but, based on this book, I will avoid buying books narrated by Mr. Brown.
