About this listen

An Astra Militarum novel.

The storm has broken, and the forces of Chaos batter against Cadia's defences. Lord Castellan Creed leads the defence of the fortress world, but for how much longer can they hold out. Cadia stands...but will it stand forever?

Listen to It Because:

Justin D Hill follows up his Ursarkar Creed short stories in Legends of the Dark Millennium: Astra Militarum with the tale of the hero's finest - and darkest - hour.

The story:

Under almost constant besiegement by the hosts pouring from the Eye of Terror, Cadia acts as a bulwark against tyranny and death. Its fortresses and armies have held back the hordes of Chaos for centuries, but that grim defiance is about to reach its end.

As Abaddon's Thirteenth Black Crusade batters Cadia's defences, and armies of the Imperium flock to reinforce this crucial world, a terrible ritual long in the making comes to fruition and the delicate balance of this brutal war shifts.

From the darkness, a hero rises to lead the beleaguered defenders, Lord Castellan Ursarkar Creed, but even with the armoured might of the Astra Militarum and the strength of the Adeptus Astartes, will it be enough to avert disaster and prevent the fall of Cadia? While Creed lives, there is hope. While there is breath in the body of a single defender, Cadia stands...but for how much longer?

The story follows many characters, and juggling them all can be a bit confusing at times, but a fine read/listen for any fan of the Imperial Guard!

Grim and dark, just the way I like it!

As the title says. Quite a few surprises throughout. Love the atmosphere built up, the story and the narration.

Good, gritty and dark

Good story beats that keep you hooked, even though we know how the story ends on Cadia. Love the character arcs for leaders such as General Gruber (sp?) and others.

Good stuff. Cadians are great, and the character writing is pretty compelling.

An excellent story. It expertly transitions you from view point to view point of a drawn out war. Even those not familiar with the Warhammer 40k Universe could follow the story even if some of the signicance would be lost to them.

The planet broke before the Guard did!

In this world of Space Marines and Deamons. It is good to see a war story like this told from the all too mortal and human perspective of The Imperial Guard.

Loved the focus on the human characters!

A good listen, I’m not a fan of jumping all over the place with different characters and story lines but it’s understandable considering what is taking place in the story

A good listen

Not an over abundance of characters. Easy to follow when listening to the audio.

A day in the life

Maybe it was all the memes that spoiled this for me, but I felt the story leaving a lot to be desired, it was lacking a high amount of detail and backstory that I think other black library content would have spent more time on.

Great Performance, lackluster story
