About this listen

A Warhammer 40,000 novel.

The Emperor's Spears are a Chapter on the edge of destruction, last watchmen over the Elara's Veil nebula. Now, the decisions of one man, Amadeus Kaias Incarius of the Mentor Legion, will determine the Chapter's fate....

Listen to it because:

Aaron Dembski-Bowden has turned his attention to creating (and maybe destroying) a Space Marine Chapter in detail, and this is your chance to discover their fate.

The story:

The scattered worlds of the Elara's Veil nebula were once protected by the oath of unity sworn by three mighty Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes. The Star Scorpions were undone by flaws in their genetic coding. The Celestial Lions were ravaged by the Inquisition for sins they did not commit. Now, after hundreds of years, only the Emperor's Spears still keep their vigil. They are barbarian watchmen against the Outer Dark, bloodied but unbroken in their long duty.

Amadeus Kaias Incarius, a brother of the Mentor Legion, is commanded to cross the Great Rift and assess the Spears' war-readiness, only to be drawn into the chaotic plight of a depleted crusade on the Imperium's benighted frontier. The decisions he makes, far from the God-Emperor's light, will decide the fate of the war-torn Chapter.

Written by Aaron Dembski-Bowden. Running time 11 hours and 46 minutes. Performed by Kelly Hotten.

I love the narrator’s performance. This is easily one of my favorite 40K books. Typical Bowden excellence, unique perspectives of familiar concepts that animate the 41st millennium in a fresh, yet belovedly familiar way. I see a lot of people complaining about the narrator. Bull! I loved her performance.

Narrator is great! One of my favorite 40K books!

An excellent viewing of Astartes from a mortals point of view. I honestly find this much more enjoyable than the usual Astartes perspective.

I would also note that the narrator is excellent and that a female narrator is a welcome breath of fresh air in my 40k listening.

Astartes, by mortals

-amazing narration and how the narrator did different characters
-very cool and unique space marine chapter that are more like a biker gang in how they act with each other… just so different
- the main characters all the way to the villains were so interesting i want to make models from them now
- i would recommend not finishing it too fast… once it was over i wanted to forget it and listen again

CRAZY TWIST ENDING

Amazing

Perfect little bubble of a story, with some excellent Easter eggs hidden for lore junkies. It’s as easy to listen to as a the sound of a single ice cube clinking against the side of a glass of 20yr whiskey.

A side slice of excellence

As always ADB gives us a tale that twists and turns and keeps you engaged, but was well worth the listen and new lore for the post warp storm is always welcome. The Narrator was at times a little try hard but now nearly as bad as other might have made her out to be definitely a enjoyable listen

Great story

the story bounced out the dark nature and aesthetic of Warhammer 40K while balancing a well played ending that some of us crave it gave us the feeling that we all like from Warhammer 40K well also giving us twists and turns to never really know what is going to happen it's a really great book and I loved every second of listening to it the story propelled itself and had you wondering what would happen in each chapter overall if you like Warhammer 40K and want a story that is going to drive you in more and more as you read I would highly suggest listening to this book

perfect blend of grim dark and a unexpected ending

ADB always surprises me. Twists and turns all around. Great listen. But Kelly Hotten steals the show. I forgot all about her feminine voice when she used the accent for the Spears. *Applause*

book and narrator... wow

I enjoyed the whole thing

Some folks say that they don't like the viewpoint of the book. On that I have to thoroughly disagree. Without giving too much of the plot away I found the whole thing a very interesting look into both chapter serfs and some of the more rare kinds and chapters of space Marines. I would recommend that you give this one a chance if either of those two are interesting at all to you.

This was also my first look into "modern" 40k, with gulliman back as primarch. very interesting situation the imperium has gotten itself into. I quite like the cultures of the chapters that are detailed within the novel.

A fun look into things we normally don't see in 40
