About this listen

A Warhammer 40,000 novel.

The Emperor's Spears are a Chapter on the edge of destruction, last watchmen over the Elara's Veil nebula. Now, the decisions of one man, Amadeus Kaias Incarius of the Mentor Legion, will determine the Chapter's fate....

Listen to it because:

Aaron Dembski-Bowden has turned his attention to creating (and maybe destroying) a Space Marine Chapter in detail, and this is your chance to discover their fate.

The story:

The scattered worlds of the Elara's Veil nebula were once protected by the oath of unity sworn by three mighty Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes. The Star Scorpions were undone by flaws in their genetic coding. The Celestial Lions were ravaged by the Inquisition for sins they did not commit. Now, after hundreds of years, only the Emperor's Spears still keep their vigil. They are barbarian watchmen against the Outer Dark, bloodied but unbroken in their long duty.

Amadeus Kaias Incarius, a brother of the Mentor Legion, is commanded to cross the Great Rift and assess the Spears' war-readiness, only to be drawn into the chaotic plight of a depleted crusade on the Imperium's benighted frontier. The decisions he makes, far from the God-Emperor's light, will decide the fate of the war-torn Chapter.

Written by Aaron Dembski-Bowden. Running time 11 hours and 46 minutes. Performed by Kelly Hotten.

Phenomenal Story

After listening to a hundred 40k books with the same few narrators, this new one was quite refreshing and amazing to listen to. The story is presented better than most I've listened to and is easily followed. It does a phenomenal job describing two chapters that have very little known about them; The Emperor's Spears and Mentors Legion. Can't recommend this enough.

The Emperor's Picts.

The story itself was amazing. Twists and turns with just enough foreshadowing to be worthy of the Black Library's modern efforts from one of it's best authors. So many directions this story can take, and you are left feeling like at some point very big repercussions will be felt in the wider imperium

The narrator did a great job within her limits, but honestly a woman's voice trying to pull off a space marine's baritone is even slightly more distracting than a man's voice trying to pull off a woman or child's voice. It hurts the immersion to some degree.

If you can grit your teeth through the somewhat noticeable cringe factor regarding that, you're rewarded with a great introduction to a unique Chapter seemingly inspired from Britain's ancient history and done great justice throughout.

Best Black Library Book!

This book will introduce the Emperor Spears. Beyond that it will craft and create characters you will hate, love, and
mourn. It will craft a narrative that will pull at your heart strings and then fill you will objective fulfillment. Highly recommend for a real journey into the 40k universe!

Not ADB's best

The audio performance is great. The chapter serf PoV is relatively unique.

Overall the ending kills any momentum the book builds too. It just pulls a 180 and who think is the main antagonist isn't. Kind of sloppy.

Nothing big comes up lore wise. If you want to read about space marines in battle, here ya go.

Worth a credit.

If you enjoyed the 'Night Lords' trilogy, then I'm sure you'll get a similar kind of satisfaction from this series. It might not be an instant classic, but I won't lie and say I can hardly wait for the next one.

ADB does it again

Really enjoyed this book. Seen through the eyes of a female slave of the mentor legion. I love ADBs first person books like the black legion series. Some twists and characters are fleshed out very well. Hope there’s gonna be a second one soon! Kelly, the narrator, does an outstanding job. I’ve been so used to male voices in 40K audio books it took a second to adjust but she does very well and it definitely fleshes out the main character. Love it!

Awesome book! Awesome narrator!

This is my favorite 40K book. I read it first and then bought the audiobook. I was initially confused by a female voice but then it clicked that the entire book is written from the perspective of a human female witnessing space marines. Somehow when I was reading the book in my own head that never clicked for me.

Kelly Hotten crushes it! I am now on my third listen.

If you can’t stand the idea of a female voice in your macho space operas then don’t get this audio book. But if your ok with that, or maybe your not sure but willing to give it a shot, then I highly recommend this book. ADB’s writing is so good and I love the main character even more after hearing Kelly give her a voice.
