About this listen
What would you do if the boy you bullied day in and day out would ultimately decide if you lived or died?
This story is about bullying as seen through the eyes of a third grader named Calbert.
Every day Calbert is forced to face his bully, Ernie, at school. Until one day when a teacher sends the boys to the storage room to pick up a few items. She is unaware of their bully/victim relationship. While in the storage room, the school catches on fire. The boys discover quickly that they are trapped and the only way out is through a high, small window. Ernie must lift Calbert out of the window. As he watches Calbert run from the burning building, he wonders, "Will this boy who I have mistreated for so long continue to run to safety, or will he come back for me?"

Paul Adams is the shortest kid at his high school, and the school bullies relentlessly pick on him. He spends the entire day wishing school would end so he can escape to his favorite sport of rock climbing. Lily Small is athletic, attractive, and, despite her last name, is actually very tall. Another kid, who looks almost like a grown man, introduces himself with a long Polynesian name, but says everyone calls him "Big," and he seems to like the nickname! As they get to know each other, Paul, Big, and Small discover they have a lot in common as outsiders in their high school.

Melody is not like most people. She cannot walk or talk, but she has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She is smarter than most of the adults who try to diagnose her and smarter than her classmates in her integrated classroom - the very same classmates who dismiss her as mentally challenged because she cannot tell them otherwise. But Melody refuses to be defined by cerebral palsy.

You can learn a lot about life by observing another species. That's what Humphrey was told when he was first brought to Room 26. And boy, is it true! In addition to having FUN-FUN-FUN in class, each weekend this amazing hamster gets to sleep over with a different student, like Lower-Your-Voice-A.J. and Speak-Up-Sayeh. Soon Humphrey learns to read, write, and even shoot rubber bands (only in self-defense, of course). With lots of friends to help, adventures to enjoy, and a cage with a lock-that-doesn't-lock, Humphrey's life is almost perfect. If only the teacher wasn't out to get him!
