About this listen

From award-winning author Sharon Draper comes Out of My Mind, the story of a brilliant girl who cannot speak or write.

Melody is not like most people. She cannot walk or talk, but she has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She is smarter than most of the adults who try to diagnose her and smarter than her classmates in her integrated classroom - the very same classmates who dismiss her as mentally challenged because she cannot tell them otherwise. But Melody refuses to be defined by cerebral palsy. And she's determined to let everyone know it...somehow.

In this breakthrough story - reminiscent of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - from multiple Coretta Scott King Award winner Sharon Draper, listeners will come to know a brilliant mind and a brave spirit who will change forever how they look at anyone with a disability.

Amazing and heart wrenching

As the mother of a nonverbal child, I listened to this book recognizing the possibilities of what exist within my own child. So grateful to Melody for sharing her voice. I pray that this book has given me the additional motivation needed to explore every opportunity for Eli so that he can share his words with me and the world.

Wonderful Book, Beautiful Lesson

I read this with my kids 10 & 11 for homeschool literature program. It was an amazing book and we throughly enjoyed the book. I even found curriculum online and created a final project for kids to complete a project researching a person with a disability and how they have overcome any barriers they have faced.

This book is equal to a roller coaster; full of ups and downs, twists and turns. I would recommend this book to anyone ages 9-99.

Amazing

The book was amazing. Different parts made us relate to our lives. My daughter thought about her friend who is just like Melody. She was very upset with Claire, Rose , and the whole quiz team. This book is so inspiring.

Melody

Melody is one of the smartest kids ever. I love watching her overcome challenges one by one. It makes me sad that she can’t talk or walk though

New view!

My 11 year old son recommended this book. Said his class read it together a few months back. My family listened to this book on the way to and from everywhere we went the past 3-4 weeks. I cried and laughed and I think back to my days in school and wonder I could have done different and if others with the same disability as Melody’s are just as smart? I’m so thankful my son brought this book into my life!
