About this listen

Callander Square is the second of Anne Perry's Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries. Full of well-drawn and convincing characters, Callander Square offers a finely crafted recreation of Victorian England. The bodies of two newborn babies have been found in a park in the fashionable London neighborhood of Callander Square. While Inspector Thomas Pitt is fighting to get the square's aristocratic residents to speak with him, his pretty, well-born wife Charlotte decides to do some detective work of her own. Soon she is unearthing secrets in every house on the square while Thomas tries to discover what would drive a person to murder.©1980 Anne Perry Detective Fiction Historical Mystery Police Procedural Suspense Thriller & Suspense Women Sleuths Women's Fiction England Exciting

Gripping storyline with a puzzle piece missing until the very end! Also, because this story is set around the turn of the twentieth century, it doesn't have the incongruities of a contemporary novel written in the 1980s.

Anne Perry mysteries are the best!

These stories are engaging and give a brief glimpse into another time. I love series that let you keep on with characters you’ve grown fond of.

Love the Pitt mysteries

What did you love best about Callander Square?

the believable portrayal of humanity with all it's beauty and warts

What was one of the most memorable moments of Callander Square?

the bumbling, internal dialogue of the foolish Mr. Southeron

What about Davina Porter’s performance did you like?

She so subtly communicates the emotion of the characters...

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

oh, yes...

Complex characters, plot; Flawless narration

I enjoy Anne Perry's stories, and can't get enough of Davina Porter's narrations. I found the entire series to be fun "reading"!

Cute series!

Would you try another book from Anne Perry and/or Davina Porter?

I'll definitely listen to more books with Davina Porter as the narrator. She almost always delivers a top notch performance.

I listened to the first in this series by Anne Perry and was disappointed with it after reading so many 5-star reviews. Thought I'd give the second a try - I did and liked it even less than the first so I'm not likely to listen to another of her books.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The way that socioeconomic class is such a determining factor in almost all interactions. Also (which continues from the first book), the limitations that women faced.

The potential suspects and their families seemed one-dimensional and began to blend together.

Which scene was your favorite?

No one particular scene one stood out.

Was Callander Square worth the listening time?

No -- not for me.

Disappointed again

I’ve listened to the first two Thomas Putt novels and to six Christmas novelettes set in the same period and enjoyed them all, but the shocking occurrences and plot twists make this one my favorite so far.

Victorian London murder mysteries

All the best elements of a Thomas and Charlotte Pitt mystery -- sympathetic characters, inexcusable characters, bounders, twits, heroines, and heroes -- all here and embroiled in a convoluted and historically engaging mystery.

Filled with 19th century British social conventions and police procedures set against a London backdrop.

This book is Anne Perry at her mysterious best!

The Pitt Family at their best!

The Inspector Pitt series by Anne Perry is wonderful! When listening to her stories I feel like I am in England at the turn-of-the-century.

Callander Square

The characters were unlikeable and the dialog was uninteresting. I did not like the whole class distinction theme of the era. Grew tired of hearing that this or that person should have “known their place”.

Unimpressed

This is a good storyline and does a good job of hiding the solution of the mystery until the end.

Good story
