Fantastic

What could be better than a mystery with intrique and suspense. Eve is a detective that feels the hurt that is caused by the killer to the victim and their families. Roarke is a multi-millionaire and he is in love with Eve. He get frustrated with her but something pulls at his heart for her. Killers are what Eve hunts and justice is what she seeks. The book leaves you wanting to read the next one.

Murder & Romance

Nice ratio of murder mystery and romance. A must for women who like romance novels, but also like murder mysteries. Even without the romance, the murder plot held your interest. Will search for other books by this author. I think the narrator did a great job also.

Surprisingly good!

The "in Death"/NYPD Lieutenant Eve Dallas series is written Nora Roberts using the pen name J. D. Robb. Naked in Death is an excellent police procedural/suspense thriller. This is a thriller rather than a romance novel. The narration of Susan Ericksen is also excellent.

This is What Happens When You Don't Read the Blurb

Yeah, I'm a big dork. I was skimming, looking for a new series to become addicted to when I found this, the first book for the "In Death" series. Perfect. I know the author is a good one, and it has lots of high reviews, so I'm in. No need to read the blurb.

I didn't know I was getting into a futuristic police procedural. *smirk* I'll admit there were a couple of times I felt like I was in that old Sylvester Stallone movie about cops in the future, and kept waiting to hear them say they had a new murder/death/kill. But really, this wasn't like that movie. It was so much better. Yes, it's set in the relatively near future, so there are some ideas and concepts that are different. But the people haven't really changed that much.

I appreciated that the author didn't spend a lot of time world-building for the future we readers were dumped in. It was a bit immersive and just right. No need to spend pages helping us understand just how much has changed--we'll get it as we go.

The characters were engaging, entertaining, and quite relatable. The storyline moved consistently and with great anticipation at times. There were also plenty of surprises and "holy cow" moments to add to the adventure. Now that I have a clue, I'm looking forward to diving into the next book in the series. I expect to enjoy it even more than this one.

Naked in Death

This is the second of J.D. Robb's books I've read. This was the best one. In fact, I'm listening to it the second time. I'm hooked.

OMG

Just started to listen, so ignore my overall ratings. I can't get past the initial problem, and I'm only ten minutes in.

Second time in recent memory I've heard a narrator pronounce "forte" as "fort." Does no one review these things once they've been recorded???

Sorry. Makes me crazy. Pronunciation is just a Google away. <sigh> Hopefully it's not a persistent problem or I may return the book. Nothing jerks me out of a narrative faster than mispronunciation of simple words.

It's a romance novel, and not the best . . .

I'm being generous to give it three stars, but there's a reason for it. The author is a romance writer, and I knew that going in. I went ahead and downloaded, even though it's not my favorite genre. I have only myself to blame if it contains some of the silly and juvenile things that are standard for the type. I had hoped for a little better mystery and Sci Fi, but I should have known. I enjoy believable romantic elements in the course of a story, but you won't find those here. The narration's good, and if standard Harlequin stories are your thing, this may appeal.

A Great Beginning

STORY - Naked in Death is part romance, part police procedural suspense. Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas's involvement in a murder investigation sets the background for the story. Billionaire Roarke becomes a suspect, thus they meet and begin the relationship which will continue to grow throughout the rest of the series. The story is set in the future so droids and futuristic gadgets continuously add interest to the investigation, and Roarke contributes in some very interesting ways as well. I enjoyed everything about this story -- interesting crime, aggressive investigation, likeable characters, romance, chemistry, all wrapped up in a satisfying conclusion.

NARRATOR - She does a great job with this book. Roarke's Irish accent is endearing, and I love the robotic sound she gives to the droids!

OVERALL - I highly recommend this book. The romance aspect might be too heavy for guys. I would probably actually rate it a 4.5 if that option were available.

Add to the "Must Read" list

I can't imagine why I waited so long to start this series. Eve is a woman after my own heart and I will not stop until I have read them all!

about average

A bit too much sex but apparently that's the way it is in all her books in this series. A good start to learn the background of all the characters. Basically a mystery, no real legal stuff but done well enough to read the next in the series.
