Walk? 500 miles? Across Spain? We can't do that!
And so began the journey of a lifetime for Reg Spittle.

An outwardly well-adjusted professional and family man, Reg was a master of disguising a lifetime of anxiety that undermined his self-confidence.

Recently retired, he never dreamed he'd soon find himself backpacking across a foreign land, sleeping in dorm bunks and sharing bathrooms as if he were a teenager experiencing his gap year.

When tragedy strikes, Reg reluctantly accepts his wife's challenge to carry his red backpack on the historic Camino de Santiago, confronting the ghosts of childhood bullies and humiliations, while packing weighty new worries.

Self-reflection, humor, and a recurring cast of characters create the backdrop for a story of hope in Camino Sunrise: Walking With My Shadows.

A Good Camino Story

I’ve listened to many books on the Camino and walked the trail five times. I enjoyed the author’s stories and thought he did a good job of capturing the experience.

Quaint story

I am going to walk the Camino francés in fall 2025 — the story confirmed much of what I have heard from friends & family who have undertaken the entire 500 mile odyssey. After a while you forget that the story in Audible is narrated by artificial intelligence, until, that is, you hear the goofy pronunciations of the Spanish terms. My first attempt at listening to it on my long daily commutes failed cause I was turned off by the mispronunciations; months later I started reading it on Kindle & got hooked by its simple storytelling & by the self-effacing honesty & warmth of the author; I then attempted listening to it a second time & finished it in 4 days.

Loved the honesty

Spittle writes with a genuine voice that speaks to his vulnerability, and that’s what makes him such a good storyteller.

Good Story - Horrible Narration

While the story was good, the virtual voice was just awful. A book about walking across Spain, you would think they would use a program that could handle the Spanish language. Instead it mutilated every Spanish word. The author should have read it himself, it would have been very enjoyable.
