About this listen

“A biography that crackles with as much energy as the great bluesman’s songs.”—Ted Drozdowski, Boston Phoenix

The epic, rollicking, up-and-down life of Muddy Waters—who went from Mississippi farmhand to musical legend, invented electric blues, and created the template for the rock-and-roll band and its wild lifestyle—is chronicled with rare vividness in Robert Gordon’s widely praised biography.

Critic reviews

“A brisk account of Waters’s journey from the cotton fields of Mississippi to the clubs of Chicago and beyond. . . . With this entertaining and important book, Robert Gordon has made sure that future generations will never forget the original rolling stone.”

John Freeman, Minneapolis Star Tribune

“Compelling... Can’t Be Satisfied is a biography that reads like a great suspense novel.”

Jeff Johnson, Chicago Sun-Times

“Gordon tells the tale with deeply researched hellaciousness; he doesn’t let Muddy off the hook for bad behavior, and he nails the sound of men beating on the devil with guitars.”

Ty Burr, Entertainment Weekly

The Great and Powerful King Muddy!

This man is a God to me. My only problem with this book was the way they lied and disrespected Elvis! Not sure why you'd lie about Elvis to make Chuck Berry look like he invented Rock n Roll? They stated Elvis came out a year after Chuck? Being a musicologist this is false Elvis recorded That's all right Mamma in 1954. Chuck released Maybelline in 1955. Elvis was the first and was the big bang of Rock. You also said Chuck went to jail, Richard joined the church...but never stated Elvis was drafted in the Army. Don't know why treating Elvis like a joke has anything to do with Muddy? I guess you got to take all the credit away from Elvis. Sad...

The delivery was pretty bad

I waited for this release for what seemed like a million years and I’m so disappointed. I just finished the book and it took me way too long to do so. I just couldn’t get behind Mr. Mo’s delivery. Just a huge turnoff really.
From one Muddy fan to another, and one audiobook fan to another, don’t get too excited. Then again, you may listen and like what you hear or at least find it tolerable(Fingers crossed).

Excellent!

I loved every bit of this audio book. Narration was just what I hoped for. I found the voice soothing, at a nice pace and easy to listen to. Very authentic story line. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
