About this listen

How do the ultra-rich keep getting richer, despite taxes on income, capital gains, property, and inheritance?

Capital Without Borders tackles this tantalizing question through a groundbreaking multi-year investigation of the men and women who specialize in protecting the fortunes of the world's richest people. Brooke Harrington followed the money to the 18 most popular tax havens in the world, interviewing wealth managers to understand how they help their high-net-worth clients dodge taxes, creditors, and disgruntled heirs - all while staying just within the letter of the law.

She even trained to become a wealth manager herself in her quest to penetrate the fascinating, shadowy world of the guardians of the one percent.

I have recommended this to all my friends and family. It is positively refreshing to look at the workings and avenues of capital from a female perspective.

Great insight into the tools that the ultra high net worth people across the world use in keeping and building wealth and the wealth management profession’s contribution to global economic inequality.

I listened to this book as part of an ongoing effort to understand global capital and inequality. The author illuminates the dynastic and colonial nature of cross-border wealth management, and gives a good overview of how the global ultra rich operate. The reader was very good.

Thorough overview of a secretive profession

The world of wealth management for too long has enjoyed a mysterious existence inaccessible to most people. Wealth managers operate in two worlds, the everyday world of the 99% and the “lawless” world of the very rich 1%. Most of us who belong to the former world know little about the latter. However, thanks to sociologist Brooke Harrington’s book, Capital Without Borders, we learn a great deal about how the very rich manage their wealth and hide it from their spouses, siblings, and governments. Anyone interested or concerned with wealth inequality must read this fascinating book.

It provided a good insight into the industry from a critical point of view. Since I knew little about the industry to begin with, this book seems like a good starting place for those interested in learning about it.

Good critical view point

Opened a window into the world of high net worth individuals. Almost unbelievable until you witness current events.

Prediction of Oligarchy

A lot of great information about the wealthy and how wealth managers help them hide and increase their fortunes. A somewhat robotic and monotonous performance that makes it, at times, hard to keep the focus with the material.

Interesting book to read

Wish I had this information at the start of my career 20 years ago. An interesting read for anyone in the finance industry working with ultra high net individuals and above.
