Publisher's summary

There is a patch of ground in Tennessee dedicated to the science of death, where human remains lie exposed to be studied for their secrets. The real-life scientist who founded the "Body Farm" has broken cold cases and revolutionized forensics...and now he spins an astonishing tale inspired by his own experiences.

Renowned anthropologist Dr. Bill Brockton has spent his career surrounded by death at the Body Farm. Now he's being called upon to help solve a baffling puzzle in a remote mountain community. The mummified corpse of a young woman dead for 30 years has been discovered in a cave, the body bizarrely preserved and transformed by the environment's unique chemistry. But Brockton's investigation is threatening to open old wounds among an insular people who won't forget or forgive. And a long-buried secret prematurely exposed could inflame Brockton's own guilt - and the dangerous hostility of bitter enemies determined to see him fail...by any means necessary.

Love it!

I have read the books but hearing them narrated did so much more than just reading them alone. The narrator did an amazing job!

Not as good as the 1st book

It is probably me, but I find that my mind kept wandering. I finished it, but cannot really say I found it thrilling

I love the forensic detail and cultural anthro.mix

Loved it. The Dr.B character is so easy to love and I wanted to know what was around the next turn in the road. Good narration.

Sexist smut!

This book is so sexist! He has something disgusting to say about every female character except his wife. He must think all females in his life want to jump his bones. I couldn't get past the middle. I tried and tried but it turned my stomach. I am in the field of anthropology and am well aware of the sexism around me but it is shoved in your face here. He didn't even entertain the idea that the deceased could be wearing her own dog tags! Not to mention they could serve the purpose they were created for and identify her. Must be a father or boyfriend or husband. Ugh. Don't bother with this trash, sexism is as old as this author. Get with the times.

I doubt I will read this author again.

I am fascinated by Forensic Anthropology and am currently working on an anthropological degree. I really enjoyed the story and there was nothing about the forensic study that turned my stomach. However, what did turn my stomach, is the main character's, Dr. Bill Brocton's, attitude towards the women characters.

It is apparent from the beginning that he and a grad assistant, Miranda, have a close relationship, perhaps leaning towards more than friendship, but "professionalism" keeps things neutral.

It is mentioned ad nauseum, how much the doctor loves and misses his dead wife and his overwhelming guilt regarding her death.

In spite of this and his feelings towards Miranda, he has an office quickie with a young female student from one of his classes. This is gross enough, but Miranda sees and is "broken hearted". As another reviewer mentioned, he seems to think he is irresistible to women. Misogyny is an undertone throughout the novel.

Astonishingly, they all go on and work together, since the young female student is so bright and promising. YUCK, YUCK, YUCK!!!!

I would have like to get to know the characters a bit more before all the emotional crap was thrown at me. Too much, too soon. Sadly, I will not be learning more because my interest in the stories is ruined.

If you're into cock fighting.

Purvy middle aged college prof. who can't keep his eyes off of his female students, when the irrelevant and DETAILED cock fighting scenes started, I decided THIS REEEEALLY wasn't for me!
