About this listen

If you are eager for more of number-one New York Times best-selling author Gregg Olsen's harrowing and heartrending prose, dig into this thrilling short story that will chill you to the bone....

They call it the Bone Box. A collection of old cases, solved and unsolved, that continue to haunt forensic pathologist Birdy Waterman. None is more disturbing than the first. After two decades, Birdy still remembers the screaming. The blood on the boy's hands. The body of a girl, butchered in the woods.

Birdy's testimony helped put her own cousin behind bars. It was a sacrifice for what she thought was right - but now, 20 years later, she wants to reopen the box. Reexamine the evidence. And rekindle her fears that a killer walked free - and is closer than ever.

Contains mature themes.

File Under: Weepy Mystery

This short book was full of pathos. I like Native American settings/characters, especially when the theme of injustice is part of the plot. This one will break your heart.

Excellent mystery novella

This is a hard length for a mystery of this type. All the clues need to be there, but there’s not much room for red herrings. Gregg Olsen balanced it well.

Lots of character backstory in a small package, with a fully developed cold case, and a satisfying ending. Well done!

Great book.

Gregg Olsen overdid himself, makes me a proud
Seattleite. This is my second book in a series, worth listening.

Great series beginning!

The story pulled me in right from the beginning and held me there. Interesting and suspenseful. Excellent narrator as well.

If you like True Crime podcasts you’ll like this book

I thought it was a fun and easy listen, the story kept me engaged. Not one of those books that I would listen to over and over again, but good to hear once.

Interesting plot with a few holes

3 of 5 stars.

Gregg Olsen is a good writer who can keep the listener engaged as a mystery unfolds. Unfortunately, the payoff, while interesting, has holes that reduce the satisfaction of the overall story. This introductory installment seems to have the right length for development and resolution while introducing Birdy Waterman, a forensic pathologist trying to solve a 20 year old murder involving a family member. An acceptable start to what could be an enjoyable series.

Karen Peakes gives solid and nuanced performance.

the story was fascinating. I wish it was better written

l like the story but the writing was not that good. It was all over the place. I listened to the end. Greg Olson usually a better writer.

performance perfection!

I loved the narration! the cadence of accents. the story was so well written, together, it brought the tale to life perfectly.
l am amazed at how, although it's a short story, it feels rich and layered and as deeply satisfying. as a full length novel. would love to here more from this character's cases in the future.
