About this listen

Once again, Washington State Fish and Wildlife police officer Luke McCain and his partner–a yellow lab named Jack–are having a busy summer. Dealing with salmon poachers, elk-killing outlaws, and other wildlife issues has Luke looking forward to an early season wilderness hunt with a long-time friend.

Luke's week in the mountains goes from pleasure to business in an instant when he is called upon to help find two teenage boys–one the son of a multi-millionaire Starbucks VIP–who have been abducted at gunpoint during a wilderness survival school expedition. Their captors and the foreigners calling the shots behind the scenes are desperate for their ransom money and willing to do almost anything to get it. Trekking through backcountry teeming with dangerous wildlife, Luke must help rescue the missing boys before the kidnapping scheme becomes deadly.

Critic reviews

"This is crime fiction at its finest–the perfect blend of a compelling mystery, a fabulous setting, the best dog ever, and a very likeable hero you won’t forget." (Christine Carbo, award-winning author of the Glacier Mystery Series)

"Cascade Vengeance takes readers on a thrill ride through the dual worlds of drug dealing and big-game hunting deep in Washington’s Cascade mountains. Rob Phillips uses his extensive knowledge of the region to tell the fast-moving tale of game warden Luke McCain and his yellow lab Jack as they face down poachers, murderous drug cartel members, and feral dogs on the way to the story’s harrowing and heartbreaking conclusion." (Scott Graham, National Outdoor Book Award-winning author of Mesa Verde Victim)

"Weaving experiences that will be familiar to any hunter or angler into a murder mystery plot, The Cascade Killer is a criminal thriller with a unique outdoor twist that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat the whole time. Phillips is clearly an experienced outdoorsman himself and the story he tells is authentic, realistic, and enjoyable. If you’re looking for an enjoyable read out in a deer camp or for just sitting next to your fireplace, then The Cascade Killer is a definite winner." (John McAdams, author of The Big Game Hunting Blog and host of The Big Game Hunting Podcast)

It keeps going

I wish it was longer and I wish the next one was out already! Hearing what Jack and Luke are up to is again a pleasure. As someone who grew up spending all my free time camping off of 410, these books have become some of my favorites. Keep it up! Superb
narrator too.

Great story

I really enjoyed the content and the story. The narration was a bit to fast. It felt as though the reading was in fast forward!

Great story, not the narrator.

First the good: Another great Luke and Jack adventure. I loved the story. I know these places in the story which makes them more fun for me. I like the twists in the end. I wish these stories were longer, but I'll just wait for the next one and buy it right away.

The bad: This narrator sucks. Monotone, no inflection, the only voices that really felt different were the Indians, and if I had to hear "bark, bark, bark, bark" one more time in that AWFUL monotone I was going to eject my radio from my car.

Listen to this, you won't regret it, even with the terrible narration.

Good story….but

I love these stories! But I’m having a hard time finishing this one. The narrator reads way too fast.. He’s not Luke McCain!

Good story in spite of

terrible narrator. Lots of familiar locations and very likeable characters.
The narrator made everyone except the Indians sound the same. Told the story flatly, no emotion, yet spoke so fast I had to turn the narration speed down to an unbelievable 80! which made him tolerable but a little drunk.

pleasantly outdoorsy

Narrator did accents well but plain English had a bad, rushed cadence. Story is OK. Since I block mid-eastern scammers conconstantly I could imagine the clumsy scheme they try here.
Justice dealt by a favorite reptile.
