About this listen

The New York Times best-selling saga: In 19th-century Ireland, a titled English family keeps an estate in an era of famine and violent conflict.

When Edward de Salis travels to America after the death of his first wife, he is astonished to find himself falling in love with Marguerite, a young woman many years his junior. Full of hope for the future, he returns to his Irish estate, Cashelmara, but in 19th-century Ireland - a country racked by poverty and famine - his family eventually becomes trapped in a sinister spiral of violence that Edward could never have foreseen.

Cashelmara follows the fortunes of three generations as they struggle to survive both the tragedies of history and their own chaotic lives.

An excellent read! Highly recommended.

This is a harrowing story of three generations of a family in Ireland before the famine, during and afterwards and the interplay of the political tensions at that time. It is very long but well worth the time and truly “unputdownable”. The narrators have done a tremendous job of bringing all the characters to life and you feel as if they are going to walk right off the page. Absolutely brilliant!

Heartbreaking and Tragic

I started reading this book when I was an early teen.. Unfortunately, about 40% of the book was torn away, and I couldn't find another copy. It has haunted me for more than 30 years. I finally thought about what story I would want to hear on audible, and it happened to be here. I found it just as disturbing as when I was a young girl. At least I know how it ends now.

Editing Errors

Part 4, chapter 7 at 34 minutes, 34 seconds, the narrator points out an editing error. How does that happen!?
Good story, likable characters while being deeply flawed. I loved how no one was perfect and all were complex. Enjoyed the narration. Would definitely like to read a sequel!

Loved it!

Spanning 4 generations, author gives each character their own voice. You’re able to see each of their perspectives stand on their own. None of the characters are perfect making each one so real, it’s so disappointing when you reach the end.

An old favorite

I read this when it was first published and enjoyed it very much. My only complaint about this audio version is the voice, intonation and inflections used for Marguerite. The voice seemed too young,
and the inflections negatively influenced the way she was portrayed.

Always one of my favorites

I read the hard copy of Cashelmara over 35 years ago. It captured my interest right from the start. I was happy to see it was available as audiobook which allowed me to enjoy the story once more. I highly recommend it.
