About this listen

When Rosamund Tomkins enters the world she is so different, with her darkling eyes and strange laughter, that the midwives believe she will lead a charmed life. But Rosamund’s life is set to be anything but enchanted. Born into poverty, brutalised and ignored by her family, it is only when she is married off to a nobleman that her life undergoes a wondrous transformation. Clever, quick and irrepressible, Rosamund soon becomes the darling of the haut ton, and presides over her luxurious chocolate house where the rich go to be seen and indulge in their favourite pastime, drinking the sweet and heady drink to which they’ve become oddly addicted. But in the shadows a web of conspiracy is spinning. The return of a man from the past brings Rosamund into mortal peril and up to the brink of destruction. As she fights for her life and those she loves through the ravages of the Plague and London’s Great Fire, Rosamund begins to realise she will be forced to make a choice: walk away from all she knows and has grown to love with her soul intact, or make a deal with the devil …©2019 Karen Brooks (P)2019 Bolinda Publishing Fiction Historical Fiction Renaissance Women's Fiction World Literature

The story was great, I enjoyed the indepth story ltellimg about history..but..so many clichés. The excessive cliché description slowed down an otherwise great story.

Well researched and great history

The book started out great. I really enjoyed the characters and their storyline. However, as the book progressed I found it tedious in its descriptions. Also, I really thought the FMC could have been given more choices for her MMC. The author could have done so much more with the characters. It really just became a romance novel and it could have been better than that.

Ok but unnecessarily long

I think this was a well researched and written book that still managed to have a wonderful and engaging story. I had no idea that chocolate houses existed, and now I want to research more about them!

Fascinating and Enjoyable!

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this thought-provoking, well developed story. Spent several nights going over what was happening to my favorite characters and wondering what would happen next.

Wonderful narrator and engaging story. Historical aspects were accurate enough that it was enjoyable instead of off putting like a lot of historical fiction.

Spoiler alert and Major trigger warning: this story includes descriptions/themes of SA and incest. If this bothers you, don’t get it. It’s not super detailed but it is an important part of the story to be aware of.

Great book but trigger alert for SA

Very good. Interesting subject matter. Clearly impeccably researched. The language can be very coarse at times, and the main character is unbelievably stubborn. Though Quakers are submitted in a kind and caring way (aptly), most other "religious" characters are portrayed with harshness & condescension.

Thought the story too long and the secret plot too predictable. It seemed more like a melodrama than a historical fiction novel.

Too long

Karen Brooks has done great research and includes it in her fascinating story. I wanted to continuously listen. Through her descriptive writing I could picture the whole story and smell the spices!

Encqptivating story filled with history

The reader was good. Some parts seemed a bit slow, but other than that, it was a great read. Look forward to reading more of her books.

Interesting snippet of history

I enjoyed this book & the story line but I found that it was very long & drawn out. A lot of this book is many different story lines converging into 3 main characters & at times it was monotonous.

Lovely Story but..
