About this listen

CASTING OFF: 1 Tying off a knitted work to finish it. 2 Releasing lines holding a boat to shore. 3 Letting go...

On a tiny island off the west coast of Ireland, the fishermen's handmade sweaters tell a story. Each one is unique - feelings stitched into rows, memories into patterns...

It is here that Rebecca Moray comes to research a book on Irish knitting. With her daughter, Rowan, in tow, she hopes to lose herself into the history of the island and to forget her own haunting past. Before long, the warm embrace of the townsfolk wraps Rebecca and Rowan in a world of friendship, laughter, and love...

And it is here that Rowan finds Sean Morahan, a cantankerous old fisherman, who tries to scare her off but whom she befriends instead. But when Rebecca meets the old man, she recognizes in his eyes a look that speaks of a horror not unlike her own. And when present storms threaten to resurrect old ones, Sean and Rebecca find themselves on a collision course - with Rowan between them - each buffeted by waves of regret and recrimination. Only by facing headfirst into the winds will they find the faith to forgive without forgetting, and reach the shore...

Highly recommend to all, especially to knitters & spinners

A wonderful, feel good book. Of course there are ups & downs ... no spoiler alert. Loved the narration. Hoping for more stories by Nicole Dickson!

Deeper than it looks

If you could sum up Casting Off in three words, what would they be?

Thoughtful, interesting, & a good story

What did you like best about this story?

I like the way the author mixes the thoughts of the two main characters with the present day situations - you feel like you are in their heads & seeing what is tormenting them. I have read this book before & I always root for the main characters to find peace!

Which scene was your favorite?

When Becky finds all of the sweaters in Shaun's house.

If you could take any character from Casting Off out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Shaun!

Any additional comments?

This book is not just for knitters. Lovers of Ireland, family, & community will enjoy it too!

throughly enjoyable

I really enjoyed this story. Loved the weaving of knitting and spinning into the world of fishermen. Also the theme of dealing with self-inflicted guilt over events not totally within the Rebecca and Sean's control. Highly recommend.

Loved the story, characters and reader. I've listened to it twice already, cds and Audible.

Had to read this for class

The performance was solid, but the actual story was very dull and boring. Do not recommend
