About this listen

“An affectionate portrait, one that recognizes Watts as musician, colleague, family man, obsessive collector and immaculate dresser.”—Sunday Times

“Sexton, a longtime Stones chronicler, tells Watts’s story with warmth and diligence.”—Observer

The fully authorized and official biography of legendary Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, one of the world’s most revered and celebrated musicians of the last half century.

Forewords by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards

Charlie Watts was one of the most decorated musicians in the world, having joined the Rolling Stones, a few months after their formation, early in 1963.

A student of jazz drumming, he was headhunted by the band after bumping into them regularly in London’s rhythm and blues clubs. Once installed at the drum seat, he didn’t miss a gig, album or tour in his 60 years in the band. He was there throughout the swinging sixties, the early shot at superstardom and the Stones' world conquest; and throughout the debauchery of the 1970s, typified by 1972's Exile on Main St., considered one of the great albums of the century. By the 1980s, Charlie was battling his own demons, but emerged unscathed to enhance his unparalleled reputation even further over the ensuing decades.

Watts went through band bust-ups, bereavements and changes in personnel, managers, guitarists and rhythm sections, but remained the rock at the heart of the Rolling Stones for nearly 60 years—the thoughtful, intellectual but no less compelling counterpoint to the raucousness of his bandmates Keith Richards, Mick Jagger and Ronnie Wood. And this is his story.

Charlie was a Class Act

A very enjoyable & feel good story about Charlie Watts, who sounds like he was just a very cool guy - and obviously a rock solid drummer. As the author says, don't expect scandal and trash in this bio - it's always fun to read a bit more of the nasty that goes on behind the scenes and no doubt The Stones have an unbelievable amount.. but this book is written more as a testimonial to what a great, classy, and unique guy Charlie was and what a journey it must have been. I highly recommend it. Good night Charlie.

Thank you, Paul Sexton, for writing such an excellent biography on the man who worked hard to keep everything private!

Everything

I liked the history of one of my favorite drummers and musicians. He was a wonderful person, even though I’ve never met him.

POIGNANT, EFFUSIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF ROCK N’ ROLL’S MOST SUCCESSFUL LONER.

The interviews and recollections of Charlie’s closest confidants and bandmates were truly inspiring—some of which had me on the verge of tears. It wasn’t that the friends and family of Watts—their words and memories—would elicit emotional responses via any dramatic accounts of the drummer’s life and influence, both musically as well as artistically. Simply put, the tug at one’s heart and the emergent tear at one’s eye, upon listening and then pondering about just how much his presence in their lives affected theirs, the quiet, reserved (or understated) nature of Charlie and all the various testaments of those who loved him, are far more powerful and impactful than the often oversized and overly dramatic retelling of the life and last days of so many of the Stones’ musical counterparts. Rest well, rest easy Mr. Watts.

Authorized Snoozefest

Was hoping for a little more insight and backstory other than Charlie dresses well and gives great gifts.
