About this listen

One of Cosmopolitan’s Most Anticipated Books for 2018

From Jo Piazza, the best-selling author of The Knock Off, How to Be Married, and Fitness Junkie, comes an exciting, insightful novel about what happens when a woman wants it all - political power, a happy marriage, and happiness - but isn’t sure just how much she’s willing to sacrifice to get it.

Charlotte Walsh is running for Senate in the most important race in the country during a midterm election that will decide the balance of power in Congress. Still reeling from a presidential election that shocked and divided the country, and inspired by the chance to make a difference, she’s left behind her high-powered job in Silicon Valley and returned, with her husband, Max, and their three young daughters, to her downtrodden Pennsylvania hometown to run in the Rust Belt state.

Once the campaign gets underway, Charlotte is blindsided by just how dirty her opponent is willing to fight, how harshly she is judged by the press and her peers, and how exhausting it becomes to navigate a marriage with an increasingly ambivalent and often resentful husband. When the opposition uncovers a secret that could threaten not just her campaign but everything Charlotte holds dear, she has to decide just how badly she wants to win and at what cost.

A searing, suspenseful story of political ambition, marriage, class, sexual politics, and infidelity, Charlotte Walsh Likes to Win is an insightful portrait of what it takes for a woman to run for national office in America today. In a dramatic political moment like no other, with more women running for office than ever before, Jo Piazza’s novel is timely, engrossing, and perfect for listeners on both sides of the aisle.

Fantastic!

Great story of what its like to be a woman on the campaign trail. This is something everyone should be talking about.

Ending will make you mad

Story was interesting. It didn't have enough dialogue in my opinion. It felt like reading an article or an essay.

And the winner is.....!

loved the ending! The story really had me thinking about how hard it is for women to run for political office and give their children and husband the attention a family requires. There are no winners in this story, and that's the point of the author's epilogue. Did confirm for me I wouldn't want my life and that of my family to be dug around in, brought to light with twisted fingers pointing out and questioning my every action back to high school. Politics just too vicious these days, price too great to pay for me. Narrator was excellent. Do wish we had heard more of Max's thoughts.

A nice book...

I pre-ordered the book because I loved The Knockoff & Fitness Junkie, which were fun and well written. This book, however, lacked the humor. It's fun to listen to - I would recommend it as a light listen. But I am not sure if the author decided what she thinks of women, men, and our roles in life. The heroine's motivations are unclear, she is portrayed as a lying, self absorbed woman, and the story is flat.
My favorite parts had to do with friendship - it seems that the author feels more strongly about those, than about women in politics.

Fun but not fully developed

I enjoyed this book immensely- the author nailed many details of political campaigns. The author however left many plot threads and characters very underdeveloped which was a bummer

Relevant, humorous, and engaging

This book resonates on many levels, at least as a politically aware woman in the post-Trump era. It hits on many themes that touch the lives of modern mothers, families, and women in the workforce. Jo Piazza provides great insight into the power of inter generational female relationships and the complexity of real life people. Charlotte is an inspiring and likable person, but not without her flaws. I appreciate that while this book is light fare, it also has great substance.

I loved listening to this book and the end, not to be a spoiler, was thought provoking.

Fab writing and surprise twist

This is the second book of Jo’s that I have read, and I am such a fan of her writing. The way she weaves a story and helps me visualize everything that’s happening in my mind. I love that she portrays strong women who are fighting for their recognized space in a world that seems so patriarchal at times. The narrator was amazing – able to portray so many voices and attitudes in a single paragraph! Brava Jo Piazza!🙌🏼💪🏼

Great Book - but there is one big drawback

POSSIBLE SPOILER ABOUT MISSING CHAPTER - The book is a great story and I really enjoyed it until the last chapter. It does not have an ending. Instead of telling us how things turn out, the author comes on and basically says she couldn't decide how to end it and that she wanted to leave it to the reader to contemplate. That was frustrating for me. It is still worth reading and I didn't return it, but I can't say I wasn't disappointed.
