About this listen

Learn about the history and geography of China with iMindsJNR audio learning series for younger minds.

China is a fascinating country where mountains tower over vast plains, deserts collide with lush farmlands, and ancient cultures mix with modern cities.

So, if you went to China, where would you start? Well, you might want to pack a big bag because China is actually the 3rd largest country in the world! Most of western China is mountainous, including the Himalayan range. These mountains are the tallest on Earth. They are so big that they help control the world’s weather. Significantly for China, they also define its border which it shares with 15 countries. In the ancient days, Europeans tried to avoid the Himalayas while travelling on the famous Silk Road—a series of trade routes from the Mediterranean Sea to inner China. Many chose to go north instead and to pass through the Gobi Desert, the 5th biggest desert on Earth.

Critic reviews

"I'm learning all sorts of stuff about stuff I didn't even know I didn't know. And it sticks. In a nutshell: wonderful." (Jonathon Margolis, Financial Times)

Third largest country in the World

Third largest country in the World, China is very vast and geographically diverse with vast plains in the west, mountains, difficult terrains and cold climates in north, warmer climates with distinct seasons, mountains and plains in central China and hot summers with mild winters with major cities in east and south.

China is a home to rivers and fertile lands and Yangtze river is the World's third largest river. While most cities are near seas, Shanghai is a modern city, Beijing is a city with temples and Hong Kong is a city with tall skyscrapers. In a civilization that is over 6000 years old, more than 50 languages are spoken and the Chinese language has over 1000 written characters. Overall, very interesting to know. Well narrates by Leah Vandenburg.

Skip skip skip...

This short introduction to China covers a very little bit of geography, some info about the language and a little history. This might have been all the real info I had about China before going there. I was completely ill-equipped. You will be too if you think this audiobook's info will get you anywhere.

I love Audible but I wish programs like this had big warning labels over them, "Written for your third-grader!" Yes, it's cheap. You get what you pay for. To get the geographical info and lots more context check out "China Road" and "Lost on Planet China" on Audible. Pray that Peter Hessler's books get read aloud soon too!
