About this listen

Want to become elite? Get ready for Chosen Suffering.

Life in the 21st century is designed for comfort - just look around. We have upgrades for everything - airfare, tickets to the big game, and even our phones. But what’s the real cost of comfort?

Easy and elite were never meant to coexist. Throughout history, elite high performers didn’t escape suffering -they embraced it. By carrying their cross, they discovered their crown.

Real champions aren’t born - they’re built. It’s true in life, business, athletics, and faith. We must transcend physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual limits if we want to achieve ultimate victory. Author Tom Ryan calls this “chosen suffering”. He knows that success comes with a price, paid for by the daily choices we make. He also believes every person encounters “unchosen suffering”, the type that brings us to our knees. In Coach Ryan’s darkest hour, he and his wife discovered joy, peace, and hope.

In this raw and relatable book, you’ll learn how the death of a dream can lead you straight into the grace of God. Ryan shares the lessons that secured his University’s first-ever NCAA National Championship. You’ll discover his proven process for escaping average and embodying greatness. Elite isn’t by accident. It’s the intentional outcome of Chosen Suffering.

Become elite, starting today!

Tom Ryan is head coach of The Ohio State University Wrestling Team. As an All-American college wrestler he embraced his fair share of “chosen suffering”. It wasn’t until he and his wife Lynette, suffered the sudden death of their five-year-old son, Teague, that they encountered “unchosen suffering” in a way they never wished. In this fire they found their faith and a process to push through the pain. Tom’s passion is to transform ordinary lives into elite champions. He and Lynette live in Columbus, Ohio and have four children: Jordan, Jake, Teague, and Mackenzie. Learn more at ChosenSufferring.com.

Relatable

I am not a wrestling fan, I have four boys and none of them wrestled. This book is so much more than a wrestling tale. It is a tale of turmoil, joy, perseverance, and living your goals . Thank you to Tom Ryan for being relatable. This book adds value to life in sometimes a meaningless world of doom scrolling.

Spell Binding

Masterful. Chosen Suffering is one of the best books I have ever read. As a cancer survivor with a similar story, I have wanted to write a book with similar theme's since I began treatment; what a blessing that Coach Ryan has.

This one is special

After meeting Kyle Snyder and hearing the depth and wisdom he bestowed upon our wrestlers, I wanted to hear more. I ended up finding a great podcast that not only hosts many wrestlers, but ones of strong faith. Coach Ryan’s was both heart wrenching and inspiring. It lead me to this book and as a former wrestler turned coach I know this path well. Thank you Tom for pouring your heart into this book and God for presenting it to me.

Inspiring

Emotional and Inspiring personal story.
A complete package.
It’s really not just about wrestling-so much more than that. It’s a framework for life. To live life with a purpose.
I come from a strong wrestling family-
I am the daughter, the sister, the mom.
I am deeply touched by this book.
Thank you Coach Rhyan, for pouring out your heart. Our world is better because of you. Not just for the wrestling world, but for humanity.

An incredible story of resilience and Faith discovery

This is story exemplifies “beauty from ashes” and how God can turn our worst days into the best days. You don’t have to be a wrestler to appreciate the many incredible life lessons. I am buying the print edition so I can go back and make it a workbook for my life.
