Publisher's summary

New York City, 1920s. When a wealthy White man is killed in Harlem, racial tensions flare throughout the city. Ava must delve into her old life in the jazz clubs and speakeasies of New York, fighting against a ticking clock before the entire city, on edge, explodes into racial riots.

City of Death (An Ava Gold Mystery, Book 5) is a new novel in a long-anticipated new series by number one best seller and USA Today best-selling author Blake Pierce, whose best seller Once Gone has received more than 1,000 five-star reviews.

In the rough streets of 1920s New York City, 34 year-old Ava Gold, a widower and single mom, claws her way up to become the first female homicide detective in her NYPD precinct. She is as tough as they come and willing to hold her own in a man’s world.

When a Black musician is accused of murdering a wealthy White Manhattanite, Ava senses all is not what it seems. Determined to track down the real killer, Ava dives back into her old life: the Harlem world of clubs. But her time is short, and there is only one thing she can be sure of: This killer will strike again.

A heart-pounding suspense thriller filled with shocking twists, the authentic and atmospheric Ava Gold mystery series is riveting, endearing us to a strong and brilliant character that will capture your heart and keep you listening late into the night.

Book six in the series—City of Vice—is now also available.

Blake Pierce at her Best!!

Of all the series Blake Pierce writes I think this is probably the best one she has going. My other favorite of hers is the Zoe Prime series but she hasn’t added anything to that series since the sixth book written in January ‘21.
Anyway, this series takes place in NYC in the 1920s. Ava Gold’s husband is a respected police officer. He’s killed in the line of duty. Ava, who grew up in her father’s boxing gym is capable of taking care of herself. She basically shames the police lieutenant into hiring her. At first put on the women’s patrol she’s not allowed to carry a weapon. She’s given a whistle and told to blow it until a male officer can come to her aid. The series has made much progress since then.
This is book five in the Ava Gold series. The books can be listened to as standalone books however there is progression is both the character’s personal and professional life that would be missed if read out of order.
Kaden Kroll does a great job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.
