About this listen

A long-overdue tribute to the extraordinary woman behind Winston Churchill.

By Winston Churchill's own admission, victory in the Second World War would have been "impossible without her". Until now, however, the only existing biography of Churchill's wife, Clementine, was written by her daughter. Sonia Purnell finally gives Clementine her due with a deeply researched account that tells her life story, revealing how she was instrumental in softening FDR's initial dislike of her husband and paving the way for Britain's close relationship with America. It also provides a surprising account of her relationship with Eleanor Roosevelt and their differing approaches to the war effort.

Born into impecunious aristocracy, the young Clementine was the target of cruel snobbery. Many wondered why Winston married her, but their marriage proved to be an exceptional partnership. Beautiful and intelligent but driven by her own insecurities, she made his career her mission. Any real consideration of Winston Churchill is incomplete without an understanding of their relationship, and Clementine is both the first real biography of this remarkable woman and a fascinating look inside their private world.

This is one of those rare books that as the end approaches you begin to fret because you realize something extraordinary is about to end. Sonia Purnell Past few equals when it comes to writing, storytelling, and weaving the intricacies of history and personalities. The well acted performance by Susan Lyons makes this work more pleasurable than any movie could approximate. What a pleasure to read. As you will see, when you treat yourself, you will dread that it comes to an end, but what a beautiful masterpiece this is of history and multiple biographies. Joe Navarro. Some of the circumstances under which large groups of people were sent to war etc. Basic truths like there is no new sin and some of the greatest hero’s are terribly flawed come to mind. I enjoyed putting dates and order to events surrounding WW2 like FDR’s death hilter’s death and the bombs.

A bit shocking to hear.....

This is one of the best, engaging biographies I have ever read! Everyone with even a remote understanding of history has heard of Sir Winston Churchill but now they know of the true power behind him, Clementine Churchill. Truly flawed human beings brought together by a shared passion for politics who grew to love one another no matter how crazy they drove one another this is a beautifully written, honest story of the true greatness behind a great man.

Riveting!!

I'm shocked to learn that there is so little written about Clementine Churchill. This is an excellent biography of of her entire life that gives her her due as the essential ingredient in Winston Churchill's greatness, as well as in containing his weaknesses. It's appalling to learn how overlooked was her contribution, not least by him.

The narrator is excellent in tone and in ability to subtly reflect different accents.

An enlightening read.
