Publisher's summary

From Marie Benedict, the New York Times best-selling author of The Only Woman in the Room! An incredible novel that focuses on one of the people who had the most influence during World War I and World War II: Clementine Churchill.

In 1909, Clementine steps off a train with her new husband, Winston. An angry woman emerges from the crowd to attack, shoving him in the direction of an oncoming train. Just before he stumbles, Clementine grabs him by his suit jacket. This will not be the last time Clementine Churchill will save her husband.

Lady Clementine is the ferocious story of the ambitious woman beside Winston Churchill, the story of a partner who did not flinch through the sweeping darkness of war, and who would not surrender either to expectations or to enemies.

The Other Einstein
Carnegie's Maid

Praise for Lady Clementine:

"Benedict is a true master at weaving the threads of the past into a compelling story for today. Here is the fictionalized account of the person who was the unequivocal wind beneath Winston Churchill's wings - a woman whose impact on the world-shaper that was WW2 has been begging to be told. A remarkable story of remarkable woman." (Susan Meissner, best-selling author of The Last Year of the War)

"The atmospheric prose of Marie Benedict draws me in every single time. Lady Clementine's powerful and spirited story is both compelling and immersive. Benedict fully inhabits the measured and intelligent voice of Clementine Churchill. Entranced throughout, I discovered the secrets behind a familiar story I thought I knew. Deftly moving from the early nineteen hundreds through World War II, Benedict skillfully paints a vivid picture of the times and life of Clementine, the remarkable woman who was the steady force beside Winston Churchill." (Patti Callahan Henry, New York Times best-selling author of Becoming Mrs. Lewis)

"In her latest novel, Lady Clementine, Marie Benedict has gifted us all with another thoughtful and illuminating behind-the-scenes look at one of history's most unusual and extraordinary women. Benedict stuns readers with a glorious assortment of Clementine Churchill's most personal secrets: her scandalous childhood, her unexpected role as a social outsider, her maternal insecurities, and the daily struggles she faces to smooth her husband's political blunders and to keep up with his relentless demands for guidance and attention. With a historian's eye and a writer's heart, Benedict provides an unforgettable glimpse into the private world of a brilliant woman whose impact and influence on world events deserves to be acknowledged." (Lynda Cohen Loigman, USA Today author of The Two-Family House and The Wartime Sisters)

A revealing, exciting historical piece

I had no idea how much I needed to listen to this book, especially during shelter-in-place.At first this felt "lite", like a romance novel, but it got deep quickly. Benedict did her research and I am did some cursory research of my own and what I checked was accurate. I was able to listen for pleasure and knit, and learn a few things. England was in the midst of a societal change and I learned how a woman who was upper class but cash poor had to budget her husband's lavish job and friends. I had not realized that Winston Churchill was a maverick long before the term came to American politics. I came out of this book having a better appreciation for a woman whose heyday was almost 100 years ago and who help shaped the world as we know it.

I am an amateur Russian scholar and at the time I thought, "She is blowing over the Russian war with Turkey! Winston said something about--" Benedict mentioned WC's encouragement to help Russia in the Dardanelles-- and how he got support, but that it was only lackluster (devastating losses to England and Russia) so it derailed his career as someone had to take the blame. I liked how this was covered and its importance not glossed over. I like how she showed that while WC was pushed off to the side, that he and Clementine never stopped working for England and influencing. When WWII started, WC was there and right for the job. Behind him and inspiring him was his well-chosen wife, Lady Clementine.

Benedict gives us great insight to some of the most prominent and powerful movers and shakers in the first half of the 20th century, and their dealings with England. This is a book that I will be getting in print as a place to get some historical references.

PS: Benedict's Clementine credits herself with so much in the novel and that WC almost looks like a doddering sidekick. I had to keep reminding myself that this is a novel with a lot of historical research. This is presented as Lady Clementine's story. It would be very dry with a bunch of "well, actually" side notes. This is fast moving and a fun listen-- there are parts of history that get skipped over and aspects of real life characters that are glossed over. It is ok that Marie Benedict did this. Ultimately, this is a story.

Believably correct history

Interesting novel portraying the role of Lade Clementine in the life of Winston Churchill. The story held my interest, and the reader is excellent. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the details but they seem consistent with what I have read earlier about Winston Churchill AND his role in WWII.

Interesting

It always good to see different views of the happenings of WWII. Not sure I would have like Clementine and Winston. They are a valuable part of history.

Fascinating story!

The characters were well-thought out. While not loveable, Churchill’s character was presented in line with his achievements. He was a man for his time, with a woman for her time behind him, but not in shadow. The narrator was excellent!

Read her other books first

She’s a great writer and it kept my attention for the most part. But it was a disappointment after The Personal Librarian and The Other Einstein.
