The daughter she gave away. The family she always wanted. The journey to redefine her fate....
Katie Callahan longs to start a family of her own. Infertile and unable to convince her relatives to accept the man she married, she regrets giving away the daughter from her secret teenage pregnancy.
When a twist of fate brings a second chance at motherhood, she's caught between joy and fear of her husband's rejection of another man's child...until a devastating motorcycle accident rips the decision out of her hands.
With her body trapped in a coma, Katie finds herself in the dreamlike space between Earth and the afterlife. Guided by spiritual forces and the soul of her beloved dog, she learns the life-changing power of intention and self-transformation.
From her ethereal vantage-point, she watches as her loved ones work together to connect the pieces of their broken hearts. As she finally realizes her true destiny, Katie's only chance to fulfill her purpose means completing an impossible journey back to life....

This was really good. It was uplifting, and sexy. It made me cry, but only because I thought of my cat Monster when Katie was reunited with her dog. And it reminded me of the real power of positivity, similar to what is taught in the book “The Secret.”
It’s not a self-help, mumbo-jumbo book on life, but a sweet and real romance, or two, or maybe later a third, with a HEA.
Great narrative job done by Mare Trevathan.

Katie Callahan is floundering in her life. Her parents don’t approve of her marriage, she doesn’t see her beloved elder sister enough, she’s lost her job, is facing infertility, and, suddenly, she’s facing the opportunity to right a wrong she committed years ago. Before dealing with any of this, though, she’s in a devastating motorcycle accident that leaves her in a coma. This was fascinating to me. I’ve wondered what happens to people while they’re unconscious. While they’re not aware of their surroundings or of the world around them. Katie’s journey was a pleasant one and I can only hope others experience something similar, even if they don’t remember when they awaken.
Katie meets her spirit guides who are there to help her navigate the treacherous journey of returning to her old life. Joining the guides is her beloved dog Bear who passed away a number of years ago. Having lost a dog years ago, I can still feel that pain acutely and would love to be reunited with her someday. But I digress. Katie has these guides to, well, guide her. To help her find a way to return to consciousness to face all the problems she’s had in the past. She’s been good about compartmentalizing her pain and trying to keep it hidden from her husband. He’s a good man who supports her at every turn but now she’s facing his reaction to her news and it’s daunting. Eventually she has healed enough to return to her old life to try to rebuild.
Things are a bit different, unsurprisingly. Her sister is now falling in love with her husband’s brother and is spending more time close to her. Her niece and stepdaughter have become close. Even her previously distant and cold mother is showing signs of thawing, having taken it upon herself to sit by Katie’s bedside and open a dialogue with her step-granddaughter whom she had previously pretty much ignored. Katie is also reunited with the love of her life and realizes she has one chance to put things to right.
As a someone who was adopted as an infant, I understand what Katie’s daughter was going through and although I’ve reunited with my mother and tried to understand her perspective, it’s a bit beyond my experience. It was a good reunion, though, and it gave me a chance to thank her. I’ve had a good life and it took a lot of courage for her to give me that opportunity. I was pleased Katie had a shot at a reunion with her daughter.
This is, as I’ve said, a wonderful book. It is Women’s Fiction with just a dash or romance – the way I like it. I felt empowered at the end of the book and enlightened. I cannot recommend this book enough.

I love the concept of spirit guides and positive thinking so that part of this listen was interesting. I wanted to care about Katie and Liam, the two main characters, I really did. I just never got why Katie didn't tell told Liam about the baby. I never got why her father gave the baby away to a distant cousin - and didn't tell her. I never got why, in 12 years, that Katie never told her sister. There were a lot of head-scratchers like that.
I really wanted to like this listen (and I really did like the narration) but it was just 'meh' for me.
