El ayuno intermitente es un programa de alimentación en el que controlamos los horarios en los que comemos y no comemos durante un periodo de 24 horas. En lugar de etiquetar ciertos alimentos como bueno y otros como peligrosos, el ayuno intermitente redirige el enfoque desde lo que se consume hasta el momento en que lo consumimos.
Este periodo de consumo se conoce como “ventana de alimentación”, siendo considerado como un periodo establecido en el que consolidamos el total de calorías diarias. El periodo de tiempo fuera de esta ventana de alimentación se considera el ayuno, lo que quiere decir que nos abstenemos de ingerir cualquier y todas las calorías posibles. Lo que hace el ayuno intermitente es poner la restricción únicamente en la hora del día que comemos, en lugar de los tipos de alimentos que ingerimos.
El ayuno intermitente complementa una amplia variedad de estilos de vida incluido el veganismo.
Si bien el ayuno intermitente se ha convertido en un tema controversial, el ayuno en sí mismo se remonta a las sociedades de cazadores y recolectores de hace miles de años. En aquellos tiempos era una forma de supervivencia más que una práctica intencional, sin embargo existía.
En las décadas y siglos que surgieron, la especie humana evoluciono y también lo hizo la práctica del ayuno, medida que el estilo de vida de caza y recolección se iba convirtiendo en algo del pasado, el ayuno fue avanzando con los tiempos y continuó encontrando su camino en una sociedad más avanzada.
Aquí podemos ver los ejemplos más recientes de ayuno en el contexto religioso, espiritual, cultural y científicos, utilizado también como rituales e investigación médica.
En el mundo actual, el ayuno sigue siendo una práctica común tanto en el contexto religioso como en otros, pero quizás la discusión más destacada se centra en los efectos positivos que el ayuno puede tener en el cuerpo y aquí es donde sale a relucir el término “ayuno intermitente” que es la tendencia más reciente que las personas están investigando y que a su vez están practicando para obtener una pérdida de peso efectiva y un cambio en su estilo de vida.
Aunque el ayuno intermitente es una práctica que ha sido acogida por nuestra sociedad, a menudo se ha asociado con cosas que no tienen nada que ver con este patrón de alimentación y algunas personas parecen demasiado condicionadas a pensar que lo mejor es comer cinco o seis veces al día. Por eso al encontrar a una persona que esté abierta a pensar que el ayuno es una práctica saludable no es nada fácil.
