Publisher's summary

The detective's mother has gone missing. Her family is the prime suspect in her disappearance....

After 10 years away, Sofia Wise returns home to mourn the loss of her grandmother, and she’s desperate to reconnect with her family.

When a dark, devastatingly handsome stranger shows up on her family’s doorstep, Sofia takes one look and is tempted to make her visit permanent. The problem is, the town’s detective is suspicious of her entire family, and it might take some convincing to prove that she’s more interested in the man himself than in the complex case at hand.

Trevor Freeman is a hardworking detective for the town of Eron. When his mom disappears, he blames the Wise family and will stop at nothing until they are brought to justice - that is, until Sofia Wise blows into town. The mysterious, beautiful member of the notorious Wise clan complicates everything, distracting him from his investigation and threatening to steal his heart.

Despite their differences in financial and social status and the animosity between her family and him, there is an undeniable chemistry between them that has no logistics.

As their attraction for each other escalates, the relationship becomes more complex than any of Trevor’s investigations thus far. Will they ever be able to trust each other? Or will their differences hinder their chance at love?

Social class differences

Sophia's family is from the upper class in town. Michael has 2 strikes against him: He's a policeman who suspects her family is responsible for his mother's disappearance & possible death. For them to get together when there is an attraction is quite the barrier to overcome. It is a good story. I especially liked the narrator. I received a free copy from the author.

Lovely small town story!

There is nothing cozier than snuggling up on the couch on a dark dreary cold rainy day and listening to this sweet book. The story was so lovely, the religious spark in rounded it out into perfection. Great as a stand alone novel!

Small town Christian romance

This is the second book I have read by this author and the first book in this series. It is a sweet Christian romance. The book had a good plot and progressed nicely. The main characters were real and down to earth.
The narrator did a good job.

Complex

I liked this "star crossed" love story. Fortunately, it didn't end in death. There was just enough family issues to cause questions about the relationship but not enough to make me roll my eyes. I want to read or listen to more books by Rose Fresquez. Andy Garcia-Ruse did a good job as narrator.

Just ok for me

I mostly enjoyed this story. While I understand that there are families that think they are above the law and rule the small communities where they live, I found it to be just a little much in this story. It was still an enjoyable read and it leads into the next book quite nicely which I did enjoy more than this. I will say about half way thru the story I had figured out the ending of it.

The narrator did a good job with this story.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author, however, I am voluntarily leaving this review.

barriers to overcome

Sofia and Trevor have a connection that isn't really great and they a few differences. Will they let these things keep them apart? Loved his dad and sister. Her family well UGH. There is a mystery Trevor is trying to solve but it might cause a rift between him ad Sofia. This book really showed how forgiveness is so hard but so freeing.

Perfect title

This story covers so many aspects of life and forgiveness which makes the title perfect for this book. No life is simple and for the two main characters, their lives are no different. The author manages to cover relationships, (both new, old, and broken) with repentance, forgiveness, and understanding all being a part of this well done story.
The reader had a good pace, well done voices for both male and female, and easily kept the listener engaged in the story.

Left me wanting...

Sofia and Trevor's brand-new relationship is complicated by the fact that Trevor suspects her family of having killed his mother. So, how can he learn to trust that she's not just a pawn of her family?

Sofia has her own trust issues she's trying to overcome, primarily where her family is concerned.

While it seems like Sofia and Trevor may have been made for each other, there are obstacles in their way they need to overcome, some of which are self-imposed.

The challenge is... The reader is well-aware of the obstacles, but they're not privy to how they're actually resolved, since the solution takes place "off camera" for lack of a better phrase.

SPOILER ALERT!
Given that Trevor's whole obsessions with finding his mother is crucial to the plot of the story, her discovery is never fully explained. Had she changed her name? Who was the man she was seen with? (We only know it's not who we thought it was.) Had Rex known all along what had happened? And how had Trevor's friend found her? None of that is explained to us. Yet his mother's disappearance is why he's so messed up. So, it's very dissatisfying.

But then it's made worse by the fact that Trevor recognizes the need to apologize to Sofia's family for suspecting and harassing them all these years, and we're led to believe that he does that. But it's all done behind the scenes. We're not privy to what was said or how it was received. It's a crucial scene in building the forgiveness needed for him to move ahead with Sofia, yet it's hidden from us.

Which makes other things, like the Wise's presence at the fundraiser, seem random. We don't know if they're there because of the apology or for some other reason.

All in all, the book felt incomplete. While the love interests overcame the obstacles in their way, we don't get to see that happen. Thankfully, I've listened to the books out of order, having heard "Choices" first, which I did like. So I'm looking forward to listening to the third book in the series.

Revenge is mine says the Lord!

There are a lot of hard feelings in this book that the characters can't seem to let go of. I enjoyed the characters and how the story deals with things that actually do happen. I think that the town of Eron seems like a great place to grow up and find your future in. I liked that this romance also had some suspense in it, as I usually just read and listen to books with lots of suspense and mystery for me to figure out. Even though this book is stand alone I'm hoping that the next book will continue with the same characters going through life situations. One of the other things I enjoyed about this book is how the gospel message is woven through it beautifully.
I received a free code from the publisher to listen to this book on Audible. This review is my own honest opinion.

a wonderful story

I really enjoyed this sweet love story. It was wholesome and the type of love story people can listen to without nudity and sexual situations.
