Monique is a preacher’s daughter who detests the impossible rules of her religion. Everyone expects her to wait until marriage, so she has no one to turn to when she discovers that she physically can’t have sex.
After two years of trying and failing, her boyfriend breaks up with her. To win him back, Monique teams up with straight-laced church girl Sasha—who is surprisingly knowledgeable about Monique’s condition—as well as Reggie, the misunderstood bad boy who always makes a ruckus at church, and together they embark upon a top-secret search for the cure.
While on their quest, Monique discovers the value of a true friend and the wonders of a love that accepts her for who she is. Despite everyone’s opinions about her virtue, she learns to live for herself, inspiring us all to reclaim our bodies and unapologetically love ourselves.
YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults 2022 List Nominee
“A triumph in not just dynamite contemporary fiction but also in critiquing purity culture and the harm it can do.” —Buzzfeed
“[Monique's] journey toward recognizing her own value is hard-won, and her awareness of her own worth, when it comes, feels like a true victory. An empowering read.” —Booklist

Shy, bookish, and admittedly awkward, Lily Greene has always felt inadequate compared to the rest of her accomplished family, who strive for Black excellence. She dreams of becoming a children’s books editor, but she’s been frustratingly stuck in the nonfiction division for years without a promotion in sight. Lily finds escapism in her correspondences with her favorite fantasy author, and what begins as two lonely people connecting over email turns into a tentative friendship and possibly something else Lily won’t let herself entertain—until he ghosts her without a word.

Story
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.

Having intimate relations with the opposite sex is something she’s willing to do for one night only. But then came along…him.

Story
Harriet Douglass lives with her historian father on an old plantation in Louisiana, which they’ve transformed into one of the South's few enslaved people’s museums. Together, while grieving the recent loss of Harriet’s mother, they run tours that help keep the memory of the past alive. Harriet's world is turned upside down by the arrival of mother and daughter Claudia and Layla Hartwell—who plan to turn the property next door into a wedding venue, and host the offensively antebellum-themed wedding of two Hollywood stars.

MUST READ for the alleged good girls out there
As an alleged good girl who grew up in a Christian household, every ounce of Monique’s story resonated with me. Her character is so relatable and so whole - you really get an understanding of why she is the way she is, and why sex is such an end-all thing for a “good girl” to do. Anyone who has ever struggled with being a good girl and having your worth tied to purity or virginity should read this!! The author handles the topics of sex, consent, and sexuality so delicately and beautifully. Joya did her thing once again!!

Amazing amazing
Absolutely amazing. I am definitely going to listen to it again. It’s such a nice story and talks about real struggles that a lot of teenagers go through. It hits a lot of topic and it was still good at the the end of the day. I love this book.

A good coming of age story
I loved how this book discussed black trauma in a way that highlights the mental and physical impacts. I think that Mo’s journey with navigating her life as a PK was really eye opening while highlighting what its like maturing and growing up under pressure. Pressure to be “perfect” and holy while not being able to understand what its like to be a “normal” teenager.
