About this listen

The explosive new thriller from Oliver North, who stormed best seller lists nationwide with his disarmingly authentic military novel Heroes Proved, is a gripping, nonstop tale that could only be written by someone who has "been there, done that".

Veteran undercover FBI agent Jake Kruse is investigating a smuggling ring in southern California when his assignment is cut short. A prominent criminal defense attorney wants to hire Jake on another kind of mission: to kill the daughter of a local crime boss.

What began as a "contract killing" soon captures the attention of the CIA, the U.S. Secret Service, and high-level officials in Washington. The undercover agent is plunged into a deadly underworld of North Korean espionage, Hezbollah terror and the sinister deception Iran uses to acquire nuclear weapons. Caught in a web of international intrigue that goes to the top of the U.S. government, Kruse is forced to confront the ultimate moral quandary: doing what’s right when everything seems wrong.

His New York Times best seller Heroes Proved was praised by Sean Hannity as "a heart-thumping ‘must-read’ for every American" and as "inspiring truth in the form of a novel" by U.S. Army Lieutenant General William "Jerry" Boykin, a founding member of Delta Force.

Now, national security expert and decorated war hero Oliver North and former U.S. Marine and FBI undercover agent Bob Hamer bring their real-life experience to this pulse-pounding tale of international intrigue and down-to-the-wire suspense. They say it’s fiction. But it’s all too real.

Great story of suspense. You'll be pulling for the main character the entire book. Maybe to realistic.

Very entertaining

I love how he puts today's real issues in a "fictional" story. Wish he would write more!!!

Write more....Couldn't stop listening!!

Seldom do works of fiction reek of factually accurate scenarios that could easily have come from the files of government. Ollie North has the been there done that experience and unique contacts that support the other story line elements. That is but one of the things that sets him apart as one of the best story tellers in America!!!

Where does Counterfeit Lies rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's not the worst book by any stretch but as a cop some the male bravado seemed cheesy and overdone. The story was good, interesting and I enjoyed a different story background/build up than I've had before. Tochterman's voice was not remotely a favorite of mine. It seemed too contrived and I had hard time with the believably of it.

Good story but so-so voice

Good story, engaging, but halted with every few sentences as the reader seemed to take breaths in the wrong places.
Again, good story, but disappointing reader.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

NO

Would you be willing to try another one of Peyton Tochterman’s performances?

No, he almost ruined the book for me.

Any additional comments?

Terrific action filled book by real life experienced FBI undercover agent Bob Hamer. Love all of his books. However, I couldn’t stand to listen to this narrator’s arrogant, tough guy sounding delivery on audible. He even read the names of the numbered chapters with a mad sounding voice. Hysterical but miserable at the same time. Sorry audible, but I’ll listen closely to the sample narrator next time. Thank goodness I bought the hard copy of the book and read it anyway. Great book Mr. Hamer!

TERRIFIC book HORRIBLE narrator

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

A bit more excitement in his delivery would have made the book more interesting. He tried to put me to sleep several times. My rating would have improved had the narrator correctly pronounced a number of words, for instance, the word nuclear is pronounced nu-clee-ar, not nu-QUE-LER, and escaped is not pronounced eX-caped! There were other similar mis-pronunciations, all of which detracted from the story line.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No...it had to be spread over multiple sessions.

Wishing for more effective narrator!

I have a few of Ollie North's books. In his fiction books, I always wonder, just how much is based on truth - no matter how far fetched. While Counterfeit Lies isn't a deep read. It is fast paced and puts Jake, the protagonist, on the move while balancing between evil forces and bureaucrats (which can be truly dangerous). I do have an issue with the narrator. It sounds like you are reading after action reports. His voice inflections do NOT fit the characters to the point it is annoying and a bit distracting.

Overall it is a nice quick listen.

Run of the mill high speed fiction

I don't often review audible books but I want to warn others that this book is not good value for the dollar. The writing appears aimed at a junior high school level reader. And as disappointing as the writing may be, the narrator is probably the worst I have listened to in my 4 years of listening to audible books.

Very disappointing
