About this listen
Living in a broken world gives us plenty of reasons to armor up, shut down, and numb out. But God wants more for us than just getting by. When we harden ourselves to the world, we not only close ourselves off from the good things God intends for us, but close off avenues God wants to work through in others' lives as well.
With deep empathy and encouragement, writer Charaia Rush invites us to experience the countercultural path of staying open and vulnerable to the goodness of God and the miracle of staying tender in a tough world that only God can bring about.
In Courageously Soft, she helps you to:
- Identify the root of a hardened heart.
- Move from fearful self-preservation to the hope of being held
- Recognize God's presence in the midst of pain.
- Replace denial, shutting down, and closing off with abiding trust in God's love and care.
If you have been feeling exhausted, bitter, or beaten down by disappointment, betrayal, or suffering, this grace-filled book will help you find your way back to a posture of love, trust, and hope.

Story
So much of our belief can be formulaic. We often think that if we do A, B, and C, then God will do X, Y, and Z. We check things off the “Good Christian Checklist,” trusting we’ll be okay, and our trials will be minimal. But when our experiences inevitably deviate from that belief, our trust in God often crumbles. After a series of life-altering trials—including a devastating diagnosis—uncovering faith in the cracks of pain is something Kristen LaValley knows well.

Story
In this compelling and gripping book, Preston tells the story of how God chased him. The streets of Chicago were his home, and it was there that he encountered all sorts of people who had their own versions of the truth―from Jehovah Witnesses to Mormons to Hebrew Israelites. That is where Preston discovered not only the importance of the truth but how to tell the truth in a way that speaks to someone’s heart. Sharing our faith is not about winning arguments; it’s about winning hearts.

If you're a woman, chances are you know the cycle: You start the day already exhausted and end it defeated, all the while telling yourself things will get better if you can just power through this week. But then the weeks turn into months, and you start to believe you'll never be able to stop, slow down, or catch your breath. You wouldn't even know how if you tried. And yet God has made you for a life of abundance, not a life of exhaustion. It's time to quit the unsustainable pace and receive God's gift of realistic rest.

Before marriage and motherhood, she came to the United States to study to become a human rights advocate. When she naïvely walked right into America’s own turbulent racial landscape, Baker experienced the kind of painful awakening that is both individual and universal, personal and social.

As our nation has experienced a renewal of reckoning with the reality of slavery in our past and the continued struggle for equality and liberation in the present, many previously untold stories have come to light. But not every story. Some histories remain shrouded, waiting for someone to uncover them and make them known. Incredibly, some of them have been hiding in plain sight for decades. Yonder Come Day brings these hidden histories into the light in an unconventional yet powerful way.

Women were there. For centuries, discussions of early Christianity have focused on male leaders in the church. But there is ample evidence right in the New Testament that women were actively involved in ministry, at the frontier of the gospel mission, and as respected leaders. Nijay Gupta calls us to bring these women out of the shadows by shining light on their many inspiring contributions to the planting, growth, and health of the first Christian churches.

When our certainty is adrift, as though an undercurrent has pulled us away from shore into the deep, into the darkness. And if this is you—if you're in a dark night of the soul—please know that you are not alone. (And you are not as far away from safety as you may feel or fear.) The night is not your enemy. In fact, the night is necessary. Revered author, speaker, and mentor Dr. Alicia Britt Chole offers a groundbreaking perspective that reveals spiritual disillusionment as an unexpected friend.

Could strength mean more than pushing on and pushing through pain, bearing every heavy burden on our own? What if, instead, true strength were more like the tide: soft and bold, fierce and gentle, moving together as one powerful force? In Strong like Water, author and trauma therapist Aundi Kolber offers a framework for true flourishing.

If God is holy, then he can’t sin. If God can’t sin, then he can’t sin against you. If he can’t sin against you, shouldn’t that make him the most trustworthy being there is? Best-selling author Jackie Hill Perry, in her much anticipated follow-up to Gay Girl, Good God, helps us find the reason we don’t trust God - we misunderstand his holiness. In Holier Than Thou, Jackie walks us through Scripture, shaking the dust off of “holy” as we’ve come to know it and revealing it for what it really is: good news.

Story
Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. The book immediately caused a sensation. And it breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by lingering Puritanism and the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution.

A Testament to Tender Strength
Courageously Soft is a masterful blend of poetic storytelling and powerful biblical teaching that speaks to the depths of the human heart. With a voice as tender as it is courageous, she calls us to soften our hearts in the midst of life’s inevitable heartache and disappointment. Her words exude the tenderness of Christ, reminding us that true strength is found not in hardening ourselves, but in trusting God to be gentle with us, even when the world isn’t.
Charaia’s vulnerability is palpable on every page, offering readers a reflection of the raw beauty found in surrendering to God’s love. Through her poetic prose and deeply insightful teachings, she invites us to step into the tension between courage and softness—a space where we are held by grace.
Courageously Soft is a powerful reminder that our broken places are where Christ’s love shines the brightest, and it encourages us to let His tenderness reshape us.
For anyone navigating pain, seeking hope, or yearning to experience the fullness of Christ’s compassion, this book is an invaluable companion.

Beautiful words for tough world
Amazingly written. This book helped frame my thoughts/feelings around the journey towards forgiveness and healing. I loved the author's use of Ruth's and Job's stories; the perspective driven from this well-known biblical text was refreshing to read. I appreciated the author's vulnerability and honesty overall, I am certain reliving some of those painful life events was not easy. A great book, a must read for all.

Very timely and biblically sound
This book came to me at the right time. It helped me get to the root of exactly what I’ve been feeling and experiencing in this season. The hardness of my heart has come from the pain of feeling like an outsider in my church community and realizing someone I thought was a friend is not.
The connection to the scriptures gave this a depth I really needed. I’ve listened to the Job Equation chapter no less than 3 times. I devoured her words and wisdom because they were like a balm to my soul. I prayed and cried through this book. I plan to slow down and listen all the way through again.
If you feel wounded by relationships and you’re struggling to find peace in your heart and mind, I recommend this book. It’s a gift.

Everyone should read Courageously Soft! Easily a 6 Star Read!
Courageously Soft is an amazing book and it spoke to my heart in the deepest ways. I believe Charaia wrote a book that every person should read, because it is so fitting to our human experience — we all need to pursue staying Courageously Soft. I read the book as well as listened to the audio book and I loved both experiences and what I took away from both.
Every chapter was written beautifully, challenging and encouraging me in a new way. I couldn’t stop highlighting if I’m honest! One of the most impactful chapters for me was “The Melody in the Shipwreck,” reminding me that my hope is safe in God alone.
Charaia’s writing gives me permission to dream and hope for what the future holds. Her vulnerability in sharing her life experiences caused me to know that no matter what trials may come my way, with God, I can remain courageously soft.
Thank you for writing such a powerful and timely book, Charaia! The world needs this message and I’m grateful He chose you to deliver it so beautifully.
