About this listen

He’s hot and he has huge assets, but he irritates the heck out of me.

Savvy: A deadly vine is unleashed on our world, scorching everything in its path. The only solution is to pair up with Skydar—a warrior bad boy in major need of a kick in the you know what. He thinks he can settle our rivalry by staking his claim on me...as his fated mate.

Skydar: Life would be complete if only Savvy didn’t irk me. But the more we’re together on a dangerous mission, the more I realize my second heart beats only for her. So all I have to do is save the planet...and convince Savvy she’s my fated mate.

Craved by an Alien Warlord is book five in the Fated Mates of the Ferlaern Warriors series. It packs plenty of emotion, adventure, romance, and it features aliens who look and act like aliens.

This book was pretty good; glad it provided a refresher at the beginning; it helped me remember what happened in previous books. Narrators did a great job. The storyline was much like others in the genre but enjoyable.

The heroine: Savvy - after a deadly virus swept through the universe, many alien species lost their women, and on Earth, it hit the men. With almost no chance of finding love, getting married or having children, many of Earth’s women decide to become sort of mail order brides to a few different alien species that made treaties with Earth of their technology and help in defending the planet from species that were not the nice variety, in exchange for sending them females to keep their species from dying out. Savvy’s mom was one of the first that went to another planet and Savvy went with her.

The Heroes: Skydar - he was a Ferlaern warrior, though he wasn’t a warlord. While the pauldron had chosen Savvy when she was only thirteen, he didn’t begrudge the young female the fact that she got the last pauldron, and there wasn’t another for him to try for. He liked to tease her mercilessly and called her a youngling, though he felt something for her that he never felt before.

The Story: While Savvy was young, her mom was an early human settler on Ferlaern. Though the Dusk Horde attacked the village and the Ferlaern, they were huge beings with red eyes and hairy bodies. The Ferlaern saved the humans and eventually trapped the Dusk Horde on the other side of a pass in the mountains, so they were no longer a menace to the human females. As Savvy grew up, she trained as a warrior and eventually merged with a pauldron, which meant she could be a warlord. Skydar is the one Ferlaern warrior that gets her goat. He refers to her as a child, and is so handsome, she can’t keep her eyes off him whenever they are in the same area.

They have an end of the winter season games each year, sort of like the olympics for warriors. Savvy wanted to knock Skydar down a bit. When a silver object came down from the sky, the warriors went to check it out. Savvy suggested that it was something horrible and they should bury it, though the metal opened and a pale blue mist came out of it before a vine struck out of it and its roots sunk into the ground killing all the grass around it, spreading fast. The village wise woman said that Skydar was the only one who could end the threat and two of them had to find the missing links.

This was an incredibly layered and engaging story—Savvy's journey from childhood to warriorhood, the tensions with Skydar, and the looming alien threat all make for a compelling mix of adventure, romance, and mystery. I love how the world-building is woven into the conflict; the idea of interspecies treaties after a catastrophic virus sets up so much room for exploration.

The Winter Games aspect adds a nice touch of competition and personal stakes, while the arrival of the mysterious object and its deadly spread raises the stakes even higher. The dynamic between Savvy and Skydar—especially with his teasing and her determination—was ripe for an emotionally charged arc.

This audiobook was narrated from multiple perspectives, done in dual narration by Stephen Dexter and Felicity Munroe. These are two of my favorite narrators. Both of them are fantastic choices; their ability to embody different characters brings extra depth to the storytelling. They always add a nice layer on top of a good story.

Another good one in this series!
