About this listen

Crazy Rich Asians is the outrageously funny debut novel about three super-rich, pedigreed Chinese families and the gossip, backbiting, and scheming that occurs when the heir to one of the most massive fortunes in Asia brings home his ABC (American-born Chinese) girlfriend to the wedding of the season.

When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn't know is that Nick's family home happens to look like a palace, that she'll ride in more private planes than cars, and that with one of Asia's most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back.

Initiated into a world of dynastic splendor beyond imagination, Rachel meets Astrid, the It Girl of Singapore society; Eddie, whose family practically lives in the pages of the Hong Kong socialite magazines; and Eleanor, Nick's formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should--and should not--marry.

Uproarious, addictive, and filled with jaw-dropping opulence, Crazy Rich Asians is an insider's look at the Asian JetSet; a perfect depiction of the clash between old money and new money; between Overseas Chinese and Mainland Chinese; and a fabulous novel about what it means to be young, in love, and gloriously, crazily rich.

The sneak peak for the Asian rich is an eye opener with the fusion of traditional culture and today’s emerging fashion and economic trends.

The mix of chinese and Malay phrases in the story make the story easier to relate to being an Asian reader myself. A refinement to the actual pronunciation of the Malay phrases and words would definitely would further enrich the listening experience and help capture the patronage of a wider audience.

Kudos!

A new age Jane Austen-like read

Lol the pronunciations and the accents are super cringey. Lots of mispronunciation of the singlish slang

Mediocre narrator

Very entertaining and amusing book. light-hearted. The English accents by the narrator are a little grading at times...

This is almost like the Asian version of the devil wears Prada. Would have enjoyed the story of it was read by a real Singaporean!

Bad casting

if you're a Western(American) listener with no clue how Singaporeans, Chinese etc actually sound like, this version is fine. However, if you actually have any background as to how Mandarin, Cantonese, Malay or even Singlish is actually spoken, you might find the mangling of these languages by the VO highly irritating if not downright cringeful. While the narrator may be of Asian descent judging by her name, it's clear she's not a speaker of any of the Asian languages that pepper the text all throughout and does little to bring it to life. Better to invest the time in reading and relying on your imagination yourself!

Good for Western ears, not actual Asians

Awful, grating narration.
The narrator (American-Taiwanese) really mangled the Singlish, Cantonese, Hokkien, Malay words. Thought that would be the minimum they could do for a book like this.
Thankfully Audible has a refund policy.

I have so many problems with this narrator:

1. She made every female character in this book sound like an old lady

2. Not all English speaking Asians sound like that! Horrible!

3. She can’t speak Chinese (mandarin, hokkien, cantonese) and read some Chinese phrases wrongly!

Please get someone who knows Chinese instead of someone who makes a horrible impersonation of how a Chinese person would sound like! Super cringey & annoying.
