Living in a squalid room in St. Petersburg, the indigent but proud Rodion Raskolnikov believes he is above society. Obsessed with the idea of breaking the law, Raskolnikov resolves to kill an old pawnbroker for her cash.

Although the murder and robbery are bungled, Raskolnikov manages to escape without being seen. And with nothing to prove his guilt and a mendacious confessor in police custody, Raskolnikov seems to have committed the perfect crime. But in Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s world of moral transgressions, with its reason and its consequences, Raskolnikov’s plan has a devastating hitch: the feverish delirium of his own conscience.

A Classic For a Reason

Fyodor Dostoyevsky is rightly considered one of the greatest novelists of all time. Perhaps his most famous work, "Crime and Punishment" has earned a prominent place in the canon of great literature. This audiobook is a good way to experience a fantastic novel. James Foster speaks clearly, and he changes his voice to fit the different characters, a hallmark of a great audiobook narrator.

Take on a Classic

I loved this take on a classic. The narrator did a great job of presenting the internal dialogue and external events in this book. Highly recommend.

A well-woven tale

The book has a great mix of perspectives and storytelling. It also helped that the audio version makes it much easier to keep track of different characters. Overall, an exciting and thought-provoking book.

hard to keep track of all the characters

I think it's too long for an audio book and would be better read. Since I am not familiar with Russian names it made it difficult to keep track of everyone. The story was good but I couldn't finish, I will read.

complex, intriguing characters

I loved the story. narration was excellent and clear, but at times i had difficulty discerning which character was speaking because the narrator did not significantly vary his voice between characters. I had to listen to several parts multiple times and read cliffsnotes to ensure I always knew the storyline. the narrator seemed to develop more tonal differences between characters as the book went on.

for those unfamiliar with the story, be aware that the author often refers to characters by nicknames which can become very confusing...especially if you aren't familiar with Russian names.

Can’t say much negative about it

The narration was excellent. The only better narrated audio book I’ve ever listened to was “between the world and me,” and that was because it was by the author, Ta-Nehisi Coates. “Crime and Punishment” is rightfully considered one of the best novels ever written and the story is fantastic. My only problem with this as an audiobook is that it was so long I would have a hard time following the story closely enough to pay attention to all the details, which is a problem with me and not the book itself. I definitely recommend this reading of this classic novel if you’re considering it.

I loved this book!

It took several chapters for me to really engage with the main character, but one I hit the halfway point it was near impossible to put it down. I both listened to and read this book. At the end I actually cried, because I wanted to the story to continue. This will be one of those books I read and/or listen to multiple times.

Why use 10 words when 50 will do?

Way too wordy and way to stilted. I like many classics much more. Not my favorite.

Difficult start, awesome ending

I’d just finished W&P and was ready for another Russian author. I’d read C&P decades ago and didn’t remember much. I found the first several hours almost impossible to go through. However, after the initial crisis, more people were involved and it became more interesting. Near the end the redemption became apparent and the story became gripping. Overall i consider the novel well worth the time and I'm glad I listened to it. the performance of the narrator was excellent.

A great book

A look into the mind of a lunatic. A degenerate. It is fascinating to read.
