About this listen

In early nineteenth-century Russia, the threat of Napoleon’s invasion looms, and the lives of millions are about to be changed forever. This includes Pierre Bezúkhov, illegitimate son of an aristocrat; Andrew Bolkónski, ambitious military scion; and Natásha Rostóva, compassionate daughter of a nobleman. All of them are unprepared for what lies ahead. Alongside their fellow compatriots - a catalog of enduring literary characters - Pierre, Andrew, and Natásha will be irrevocably torn between fate and free will.

Through the bonds of love and family, and all that can break them, Tolstoy examines the effects of war on every strata of society in his masterwork of intimate - and epic - social history.

Revised edition: Previously published as War and Peace, this edition of War and Peace (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.

Long Book

This is a long story that is broken up into separate books. Every now and than the writer writes about events and how they came about and the out come. Like explaining the story. the last book is just the author talking about mankind and its thinking and emotions.

very great job

other than the curse words, i thought that Edoardo Ballerini did a very great with this narration. i simply can not get enough of this beautiful story. I simply adore the love affair that Natasha has in this story and i simply love the romance in this story. if there is any one that knows how to make a female reader like me swoon, it is Leo Tolstoy

Excellent

Edoardo Ballerini makes this 551/2 hours dreamlike. Don’t be discouraged by it’s length. You will see why this book is timeless.

More interesting than I expected

I really enjoyed this book. The narrator did an excellent job because it was easier to listen to all the different names being pronounced which helped me to follow and understand the story better.

Excellent Narration of a Great Novel

This is perhaps my fourth reading of War and Peace and my second audio version. Ballerini is a great narrator, far superior to the other one who is available on Audible. My only complaint is with the odd paragraph or sentence that is edited out. This seems to be the case for nearly all audiobooks; even the "unabridged" versions are abridged. It would be nice if they really were the whole book.

a classic indeed, great performance

I love the book, the writing is superb character development fantastic, many story arcs ebb and flow with ease and clarity.

my main challenge was maintaining patience through some long-winded passages where it felt like Tolstoy wanted to be more of a philosopher than an author. although I did learn a great deal about the historical accuracy of the war.

A sweeping epic

There should be no need to review the book. Edoardo Ballerini's narration is up to the task. This audiobook made for a couple of months of engaging entertainment, with a good dose of free will and history.

FANTASTIC!

Wonderful experience listening to this classic. The details as written by Leo Tolstoy are not captured in any video version I have observed. The audio book enhances all video versions and gives a vivid rich detail that transports the listener to early 19th Century Europe and specifically The Russian Empire both in the Napoleonic Wars and Russian people and families it consumed. Fantastic details of the Wars and of the Peace. The contrasts and the oneness of the entire period. A must experience of the Classic especially for the auditory inclined. In Summary…FANTASTIC!
