Publisher's summary

Get ready for the wettest, stormiest, wildest trip through the Gospels you've ever taken!

The Gospels are dramatic and incredibly wet, set in a rich maritime culture on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Yet we've missed much of this perspective - until now. Leslie Leyland Fields, a seasoned Alaskan fisherwoman, leads us across the waters of time and culture out onto the Sea of Galilee, through a rugged season of commercial fishing with her family in Alaska, and through the waters of the New Testament beside the ragtag fishermen disciples. Her own story and her fresh insights will challenge your understanding of Jesus and what it means to "come, follow me".

For disciples everywhere!

We met Leslie and Duncan in central Africa many years ago! They were crossing the continent on their own and needed an oasis of rest before they moved on. Our time together was delightful. And so was my time shared with them in the reading of this inspirational book! Thanks for writing it Leslie! Bruce and Joy Tru316.com

Real-life stories

Leslie easily holds your attention with stories of her own experiences fishing in Alaska, and then comfortably relates them to the episodes of Jesus as He dealt with similar situations. Interesting and captivating!

Inspiring and insightful, one of the best books...

I've read in years. I've just finished my third time through, listening to it for fifteen minutes each night before I go to sleep.

I purchased this in the spring while looking for a book about the Galilee of Jesus' day and found it to be so much more than I expected. It's not just that it's written by a woman, although her combination of personal experience in the Pacific waters off Alaska and walking and fishing in Galilee are to the point. It's also that it's more of an extended reflection, not teaching or preaching. Her experience as a fisherman: when she talks about the passion that fishermen have for their work and the complete unlikeliness of Jesus' first followers to leave their nets, she brings her points home with insight, born of thirty years personal experience and her profound faith.

The narration is excellent, and it adds much to the book. I recommend it highly.

Heart wrenching and beautiful.

Leslie's story of being a fisherman's wife on Kodiak Island in Alaska and raising 6 children to be fishermen is astonishing, eye opening and mind boggling. On the practical side I will not be able to cook or eat a salmon filet without thinking of the tremendous struggle and hard work and sacrifice she and her family (and others) put out to catch these wonderful silver, pink and red fish. Wow.
Battling storms, hauling in empty nets, mending torn and ragged nets. What a hard life. One horrible night when mountainous waves and strong winds made it almost impossible to drag in the nets. Arms and back straining, water knee high in the boat...she had a miscarriage. She went to clean up and then back out in the dark alongside the men to get the catch in.... knowing a life had just been lost.
Leslie Fields' writing is captivating about her life, but intertwined in this story, she tells of a visit to Israel to hike around Galilee Sea. The people she meets, the sights and experiences, are threaded through with Bible stories about Jesus and his disciples... especially those who were fishermen. She identifies with them, learns from and with them, and mostly from Jesus' dealing with them. Just as He deals with her.
This book brought me joy, tears, insight, humor and sacred love.
I highly recommend it.
