About this listen

Killashandra Ree has spent ten grueling years in musical training, anticipating interstellar celebrity as a vocal soloist. She is young, beautiful—and still without prospects. After learning that a flaw in her voice will prevent her from singing lead, she hears of the mysterious Heptite Guild on the planet Ballybran, where the fabled Black Crystal is found. Mining this strange form of crystal is a dangerous occupation but to Killa, the risks are acceptable. Remarkably, her adaptation to crystal mining is unusually rapid and easy and Killashandra advances quickly. The problem is—few people who land on Ballybran ever leave.

Bad transfer!

I had this audiobook on tape from when it was originally released, but as far as I can tell, there no mastering done on the tape trance and it was not handled by experts or from a master tape.). Skip this. Good story and Barbeau is a good reader but the mastering (or lack or it) destroys this.

Good for abridged version

After having read the original book years ago, it was nice to hear a fair reading. It would have been better if it had not been abridged.

I Love this Story

I have read this Story so many times. I was sad it was Abridged but my Brain added the extra parts. The rewrite for this version was done well. The narrator was very good, the audio quality was iffy. But Still a wonderful Listen.

Wish it wasn't unabridged

Just say no to unabridged! So much information missed... so sad to miss so much character background.

great story but the narrator could have showed better emotion. sound quality is poor also. sounds like being read through a tin can.

bad quality recording

Sadly the sound quality was horrible. Very muffled. I even removed it from device and downloaded it again. no change. I owned this recording on Tape so know it sounds good on that medium. Shame on Audible for putting out such a poor quality product.

Good story, narration needs work

I’m a huge fan of Anne Mccaffery and adore the Crystal Singer series, but the narrator sounds like she’s running a foot race. She speaks too fast and has very little inflection. Really ruined the story for me.

Abridged, old, classic

I love the book I wish it were available unabridged.

I really notice the difference in the audio quality. (Copyright Dove audio 1991)
