About this listen
Join supernatural agent Eddie Drood on a dangerous adventure in the second Secret Histories novel from New York Times best-selling author Simon R. Green.
“Fans of fast-paced heroics, featuring a snarky knight armored in silver and sarcasm, need look no further; Eddie Drood is your guy.” (SF Revu)
For centuries, the Droods have been fighting the monsters in the shadows so that the rest of you lot can go about your everyday lives. These days, I’m the head of the family, and it’s fallen to me to deal with a bit of a mess left over from World War II.
Seems that back then the Droods made a pact with a bunch of demons known as the Loathly Ones to fight some really nasty buggers called up by the Nazis. Once the war was over, we couldn’t get rid of them. Now they’re calling their masters to invade and destroy our world...and we Droods are the last, best hope of stopping them.
I’d say that the world is in a major lot of trouble.

I left there a long time ago, with my skin and sanity barely intact. Now I make my living in the sunlit streets of London. But business has been slow lately, so when Joanna Barrett showed up at my door, reeking of wealth, asking me to find her runaway teenage daughter, I didn't say no.

Owen Deathstalker, last of the infamous warrior Clan, always considered himself more of a writer than a fighter, preferring his history books to making any actual history with a sword. But books won't protect him from Her Imperial Majesty Lionstone XIV, who just outlawed and condemned Owen to death, without any explanation, reason, or warning. No wonder she's called the Iron Bitch. Now, on the run from Imperial starcruisers, shady mercenaries, and just about everyone else in the Empire, Owen's options are limited.

Once upon a time, there was a forgotten era of magic and monster. But the remnants—and all memory—of the old world have been replaced by the sane, the scientific, and the rational. But sometimes the magical past isn’t content to stay past. That’s where Jack Damian comes in. It’s his joy to protect our present from the supernatural remnants of an earlier time, a different history. It’s his job to make the past safe. Jack is called to the Tate Museum, where dozens of people have disappeared beneath the surface of a painting.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

I tried
Great narrator… but I could not get into it at all. And a little too much with the incestuous stuff and other provocative sexual material. Felt like it took away from the story, unless that was the goal of the author of course. Other issues as well, but I’m not wanting to just pile on. Could be perceived differently from person to person so no reason to not check it out with it being a free download.

Lost down the rabbit hole
The first few hours were interesting, with a growing game board full of ne’er do wells and rogue Droods amassing at the Drood compound to take on a Loathly Armageddon. The Blue Fairy, Mr. Stab, a half daemon … so many characters of dubious intentions. But, by the halfway point it became an incoherent jumble of twists, time jumps, and not at all credible solutions.
As with many of this author’s books, the plot lacks of a known villain to provide a foil to Eddie.
Bad enough it’s the faceless, all powerful Them, but for 20 hours? Ugh.
The lack of character development, beyond coming up with interesting creatures, extends to Eddie himself who is your typical all powerful white guy surrounded by white humans.
There were an oddly high number of effeminate men and MM pairs made up of men who also liked women (because he didn’t want them to be simply gay?). It felt like the author was trying to be cutting edge with fluid orientation, maybe as an attempt to track the MM side plot of the original Bond book?
It didn’t feel mean spirited or anything. I just never bought it and was left scratching my head.
