In the late 7th Century, the High King of Ireland is killed at night in the middle of his compound. It was a joy to rediscover once again the history of ancient Ireland through the eyes of Lady Fidelma of Cashel. What is often recorded as fact in history books may not always be the truth. Peter Tremayne gives a sound take on the murder of a High King.

This story digs into the tensions between the “old ways” and the “New Faith” with much more detail than previous books, and is very interesting for that. The plot, on the other hand is very slow, and the reveal, in typical Fidelma fashion takes almost 40 minutes (audiobook). We also start to see Fidelma’s self-awareness increase when it comes to how she treats Eadulf. The audiobook makes some of the historical minutiae rather tedious in the attempts to explain them, but the net effect does work to help situate the reader in 7th-century Ireland.

These stories are indeed a great respite from modern mysteries. I especially love that the main character is a strong female who doesn’t back down from much of anything and yet can conduct herself with grace when ruffled by others egos.
