About this listen

Matthew Bartholomew, unorthodox but effective physician to Michaelhouse college in medieval Cambridge, is as worried as anyone about the pestilence that is ravaging Europe and seems to be approaching England. But he is distracted by the sudden and inexplicable death of the Master of Michaelhouse - a death the University authorities do not want investigated.

But Matt is determined to get to the truth, leading him into a tangle of lies and intrigue that cause him to question the innocence of his closest friends - and even his family - just as the Black Death finally arrives.

A Plague on Both Your Houses is the book that introduced Matthew Bartholomew to the world.

Good story

The plot might be a little too complicated but comes clear in the end. Great start to a promising series

Like Masterpiece Theater for your ears

I loved reading this series, hoping for more. But this is so much fun to listen to thanks to the extremely talented narrator. He voices dozens of characters so well, that it’s like Masterpiece theater for your ears. He brings this series to life in a way that reading it on your own can’t. I’m looking forward to binge listening my way back through the series.

Tedious

A charming character trudges through this historical who-done-it. But the time it ends it has become a who-cares-who-done-it. The side-dish history lesson is better than the main course mystery. David Thorpe could read the telephone book and hold me to Z—-but it would still be the telephone book.

Enjoyable

This is a good book with an interesting plot. I also enjoyed that the black death was included in the story.

A great glimpse of historical Cambridge amidst a mysterious plot.

Great reader. A mystery in historical Cambridge. Very enjoyable. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. I loved C.J. Sansom’s Shardlake series. I’m excited about another mystery series set within medieval England.

who knew COVID was coming?

great chapter of a continuing saga especially relevant in these COVID years, although it was written a few years before. I like the author's historical detail which seems accurate

Excellent story and narration

Medieval plague years brought to life with grim realism. The characters are interesting, as is the story. Can't wait to read the next book.

I don't faultl the reader

I fault the director or producer. I noticed at least 3 instances when the wrong word was said, but it wasn't caught.
